BAR CODES

Posted by CCNL on September 25th, 2011 11:21 am

I’m with you, Jo, we do need to pay attention to labels. A friend of mine sent me a breakdown of how many of the ingredients also contain MSG. I never thought of that except in connection with Chinese food. For some people that is a problem.

Just when we thought the hot weather was over–a few nights in the 60′s and days under 100–supposedly it is now Fall. Today is to be 103 again and the usual “possible scattered showers by the end of the week.” A chart in the paper this morning showed September 2010 we had 13 inches of rain; September 2011 (as of today, the 25th) .16 of an inch.

Bar Codes

Posted by Co Jo on September 18th, 2011 6:55 pm

My daughter and son-in-law here in town emailed me that the one I got was half right and half not (check out snopes.com) but still I figure it will alert us to what is a good thing to do, anyhow – reading the labels. Maybe if we all stop and look, SOME businesses will return to this country. Why should we support other countries when we have much need here in our own?

Jo, I am so glad you posted that info. I do read labels. Last week I bought tomatoes which had the name of a grower and town in Texas. It was not one of the big names they routinely carry so I thought they were a new “in state” source. It did not say “distributed by.” When I got home, I found another place in small print “Product of Mexico.” I plan to ask the produce manager when I go back there–it was deceptive, as far as I am concerned.

Update on son Mark

Posted by Co Jo on September 18th, 2011 12:08 pm

Well, they didn’t have to evacuate which was a good thing. I’ve not really heard much more from him – he may be helping those who were affected. But all is well with them.

My thoughts are with those who weren’t so fortunate.

A good thing to know

Posted by Co Jo on September 18th, 2011 12:04 pm

I got this in an email this morning and I am happy to know how to read barcodes and find out where things are from. I would MUCH rather support the American economy (or maybe Canada) than the rest of the world. Charity (!) begins at home.

< < ALWAYS READ THE LABELS ON THE FOODS YOU BUY--NO MATTER WHAT THE FRONT OF THE BOX OR PACKAGE SAYS, TURN IT OVER AND READ THE BACK---CAREFULLY!
With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read label at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products. Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located. It is important to read the bar code to track its origin.

How to read Bar Codes .... Interesting!

This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you.
GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA " AND NOT FROM CHINA!!The whole world is afraid of China-made "black hearted goods".

Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA. 471 is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the Public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves. Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode - remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 ... Then it is MADE IN CHINA
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 ... FRANCE
40 - 44 ... GERMANY
471 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK

BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number.

Shivering!

It is only 88 with high projected of 95–amazing how cool that feels after weeks of triple digits. It was very cloudy this morning and it looked as though we might get a few drops–didn’t happen. It did sprinkle a little yesterday about 10 miles from me.

I was thinking of your son, Jo, when the fire started around Bastrop–haven’t heard this morning but about 25 percent is still burning. Thank goodness there is little wind so people are beginning to get back in and see where to begin.

stuff

Posted by Darlyne C on September 13th, 2011 7:12 pm

we are just about recovered from Irene except for some roads. NJ had more rain in August than ever before. This afternoon though, an elderly man ran his car through the door of our favorite grocery store. This store suffered a great loss when their power was out for three days. They will open as usual tomorrow. :) .

I’m glad I left TX too, but the fires were too close for comfort for my #2 son Mark. They have a small ranch where he raises beef cattle. He and wife Marge were packed up to evacuate but didn’t have to.

Weirdest weather this year – extremes.

Daughter Debbie (newly moved here from FL) and g’daughter Jenna took me for brunch yesterday. Daughter Suzanne is taking me for dinner tonight. Come 4:30, I have to get ready and go downstairs to our ‘usual pickup place.’

I can well imagine Clive in particular but both of you are glad his chemo is at the end. I hope it took care of the cancer cells and all is well. Positive thoughts and prayers still headed your way.

Gee whiz, why am I yawning? :-| <=======stunned look (or maybe it’s the ‘nobody home’ picture. Whichever, it fits and that’s all that’s required! LOL

So I’m off to get ready a bit ahead of time – Have no idea where she’s taking me, however she said casual. I can do that for sure.

SEPT

It’s nice you’re learning volleyball, Jackie–your grandkids are keeping you up to date on sports. With no grandchildren I’m clueless about volleyball rules and scoring–it didn’t come up until long after my son’s school days.

So glad Clive’s treatments completed. Now if we can all just have normal fall weather and stop all the extremes.

Oslo and Sept

I’ve been wondering how you in weather are doing? There seems to be so much of it over the US. Clive had his 42 radiation on Thur, and the last one. He really sailed through it with just some tiredness, but says he was tired at times before he started. He will be checked in Dec, and prayfully, the cancer cells in his prostate will be gone.

We have our youngest son in law living with us, and their oldest daughter, Sydney, through the weeks. Eric has started a new business in East Grand Forks, where Sydney is now a 10th grader. Our daughter and younger children will move here in the spring. She has a good job, and they need to sell their house in St Paul.

Our life has changed, but its working out well, Sydney plays volley ball, so I’m learning that sport, a grand son still wrestles his senior year, it adds to our evenings.

We are enjoying truly “Indian Summer” days. Kind of makes up for a cold, wet long spring, and iffy summer. But can’t complain, no IRENE, or fires like the south. Nice to catch up with you, Jo, and everyone. Jacky

This old car

Posted by CCNL on September 5th, 2011 3:45 pm

Great parallels, Jo. I hope replacing a couple of shock absorbers will give this old model a few more miles.

Jo, be glad you left Texas. Reports are that over 300 homes have been destroyed by a wildfire over thousands of acres near Bastrop yesterday and not yet contained. 5000 people so far have been evacuated and a new report said they are considering evacuating the town. This has been the hottest year on record for drought and heat. TV pictures of the state with fire symbols showing the many fires are amazing–too much wind and everything so dry.

G’morning all — ooops, it’s afternoon!!!

Posted by Co Jo on September 5th, 2011 2:18 pm

Hit the wrong key. Growl.

Before I go on, I found this on Facebook and LOVE it.

< < If my body was a car, I would be thinking of trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps, dents, scratches and my paint job is getting dull. My headlights are out of focus. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach maximum speed. But the worst is...every time I sneeze, cough, or sputter either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires! repost if this made you laugh......i just did! >>

Jacky, I hope Clive isn’t having problems with his Chemo – good luck to you both.

The loss of power really does affect our electrical/electronic world; happy you’ve got yours back, Darlyne.

Two working knees – what a joy THAT must be.

Nothing happening here this weekend. I did get a smaller dining table and will donate my other one to Goodwill or Salvation Army or whoever will come and take it away. Debbie is in CA (probably coming back today some time) helping son and some others celebrate birthdays; he’ll be 30. He even bought her ticket for her…good kid.

Suzanne is up to her ears in something or other. I’ve not heard from her at all. Next weekend is my birthday (Sunday) and it’s also Suzanne’s mother-in-law’s b’day. Did I tell you that she and I shared that date? What are the odds of that????? So Paul will fly to CA from wherever he’s working this week and Suzanne will fly there to meet him and they’ll go on to help Dina celebrated her 90th.

I wrote down those two books y’all were talking about. I really like Higgins’ adventures. Can’t do that sort of stuff myself so I’ll enjoy reading it. ;)

Hope your weekend was good. Take care all.

Cutting For Stone

Posted by Darlyne Crum on September 5th, 2011 8:57 am

I also couldn’t put that book down. Storm hunters also had twins and now I plan to read Flight of Eagles. By the way, Bird Cloud was a new book of Annie PRoulx and was on tape. It was read by the author and one other person.

More Books

Posted by CCNL on September 4th, 2011 6:54 pm

I just finished “Cutting For ßtone.” It was recommended highly by a friend who does not ordinarily do more than mention a book he’s read and liked. Had it been outlined before, I would have thought no way does this sound like something I’d care for. Going into it cold I was delighted to find I could hardly put it down.

At the same time, in the car I was listening to tapes of “Flight of Eagles” by Jack Higgins. The fact it is on tape tells you it is not a new book. A lot of times I drove an extra few blocks because of the suspense. By coincidence, both books happened to involve twin brothers, very different stories–both fascinating and full of twists.

I to intend to look into the one mentioned just before this one–already forgot the title (short term memory!!) but was glad to know about it–sounds like something I’d like.

It is good to see some familiar names. I guess for some Facebook has taken the place of this–miss them.

Annie Proulx

Posted by Darlyne Crum on September 4th, 2011 1:45 pm

I finished  Bird Cloud and enjoyed it very much.  She wrote about her child hood a little but most of the book was about building a house in Wyoming, so remote she couldn’t stay the winter because the road would close. If you are a nature or bird lover you would like this book.  She writes about a pair of  bald eagles and also of a pair of golden eagles that have nested there for years. She also writes of much of the history of Wyoming and how the area she is in hasn’t changed/  She compares pictures that were taken long ago to the area now.

Shouldn’t have

Posted by Darlyne Crum on September 2nd, 2011 9:30 am

I should’t have gone swimming yesterday,  I hadn’t been in the pool for over a week.and it was cold.  It took me all day to warm up. I was also very stiff from not swimming  I sat in my chair all day after swimming.

WOW

Jo, it sure is good to have you bak. I have to say the time gets away. I still haven’t started the book I mentioned in the last post. I am reading Katie Couric’s book, The Best Advice I ever Got. I have thoroughly enjoyed that.

Can’t imagine the power being out for days.

Hope you are all well.

If you can’t remember your password, the program will email you a new one — just click on “log in” on the right and then when you’re on the login page, click on “lost your password?” It’s super easy and fast.

Just testing;\
