Books

Posted by Darlyne C on March 29th, 2011 1:38 pm

I aqm back to reading Freedom which I started before I flew to ND and gave to my daughter when I got to WI because I wasn’t that interested and it was too big and heavy for airport reading. I hope to finish it before I go home. I think the dog learned not to climb up on the counter but I am not sure.

Books and time

Georgianna, my problem is the Kindle and the instant access to some book I hear being discussed on C-Span 3. I downloaded “The Googlization of Everything” Sunday and wanted to get “Don’t Get Me Wrong” but it wasn’t available on Kindle. It would seem to lend itself to Kindle since it shows the various hand signals used to convey different messages throughout the world and how some used in the US are insults in some countries and vice versa. I end up reading some of every book, then have interruptions and when I get back to it have to review the premise. I think “The Housekeeper and the Professor” is the first I’ve completed in a relatively short time in a year.

It is good you have the stair chair available as an option for those times you need it.

I sure enjoy this group and listening/reading your comments about books. I somehow must get better control of my time. I do read but I don’t seem to get novels read. I probably have ten on my to read spot.

We just had a stair chair put in. I appreciate having it but I also know I need the exercise that I get by climbing up and down the stairs. My husband won’t use it. He did one time but he only goes downstairs once in the morning and only comes up once in the evening – when it’s bed time. His energy level is so low.

Thanks for being you. Georgianna

Counter dog

I think she thought she would find a goodie up there. She had learned to counter surf standing on her hind legs so we are pretty careful about not keeping food around where she can get it.

The Professor book did generate much talk at our library book club meeting,

They somehow often come up with something unexpected. That had to be quite an experience for both of you, Darlyne, Wonder what he was thinking when he climbed up there.

Finished the Housekeeper and the Professor. It seems to me it would be a good choice for a book club. The discussion questions at the end organize aspects of the story in a way I had not done, although it held my interest with questions about what the incidents recounted represented.

Joyce Carol Oates

When I wrote JKO it was a slip. I have a relative with those initals and she signs her letters that way.

JKO

Posted by Darlyne C on March 27th, 2011 1:29 pm

I have run into JKO in the drugstore and on the street. I have had a chance to attend a lecture or two of hers but haven’t for some reason.

I posted on FB about the dogs but will here again. I walked into the kitchen and found the house lab cowering on the kitchen counter. She didn’t know how to get down. There is a dog crate next to the counter and she must have climbed on that to get up there. She is in agility training and I guess knows how to climb. I worried about her hurting herself but couldn’t lift her down so kinda nudge her toward the crate and got her down. I have never seen a dog on the counter, cats yes but never dogs. I told my daughter that my job description is emptying the dishwasher and making coffee, not getting labs off a counter.

Your canine duties sound fun, but busy. I talked to oldest daughter this am and she had a day off from teaching and read in one day, Joyce Carol Oates book about the loss of her husband, can’t remember the name of it, but she really liked it. Since Joyce C O. teaches at Princeton, I wondered if you have seen her? Oates said her teaching saved her sanity after her loss. She is about 73, I think. I quit reading her books and short stories years ago, and I found them depressing.

We are flying home from Daytona Beach tomorrow, Clive found the seats so tight that we checked on upgrading to first class—-740.00! We are going home the way we came. its over 80 here today, and the river is rising at home in MN, but we can still get to Oslo which becomes an island at times. Jacky

good for you Candace for posting to the above, and also some of the others.

I notice weekends are especially bad , the numbers are so low. And of course Holidays, no one Clicks.

I try to do my part.

No posting

I guess it just wouldn’t let me post from my i-pad. It would post the title and that’s all. Go figure!

Anyway I am in
WI in the land of daughter and dogs. It is a very busy time here. We get up at 5:00AM. My daughter is on the go until late evening with just a few breaks. I mostly man the house and phone. There is little time for reading but when I can I am reading Moby Dick. I never did read it when I was supposed to, I think I had a friend tell me the story and I acted like I read it. I am enjoying it now.

it won’t let me post for some reason.

POSTS

Guess everyone has other stuff taking their time. Joanne, every morning I click on all one of the causes on the site with the breast cancer as well as another that covers other worthwhile causes. I don’t know why everyone doesn’t do that as part of their routine. It is interesting to watch the fluctuation in the amounts every day. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern why one day is high for all and then drops off across the board. It costs nothing to click and encourages advertisers who provide the help.

Nobody Posting for ten days?

Posted by bookwrm on March 24th, 2011 2:28 pm

Whur is ever one? Duh. Just kidding!!

I guess since no one is posting, I will just make a reminder to go to “The Breast Cancer Site” and click to give free mammograms. Doesn’t cost anything! (as you all know) The numbers of clicks are so low it is discouraging!

I’m about halfway through it, Darlyne, and trying to figure out why it has kept my attention. It is not your usual novel, that’s sure.

I would like to hear what you think of that book if you read it. It was unusual, but I enjoyed it.

I just downloaded The Professor and the Housekeeper. It will share time with The Social Animal by David Brooks is another I had to get while listening to his interview. With Spring and gardening pulling me outside, can’t use the bad weather as a reason to just sit and read.

Prof. and housekeeper

Posted by Darlyne C on March 11th, 2011 11:27 am

The professor had little notes pinned all over his suit reminding him. The most prominent one had written, I have only 80 minutes of memory. I am not sure that would work for most of us but I do write many things down that I have to remember even though I am sure I will remember it, I often don’t. Once when I was working I had a patient in the bathroom that I had to remember to check on. I put a piece of tape on my forehead and people would ask why the tape and I would remember the patient. I was too busy to stand there for a long time.

Darlyne, the premise of the book sounds interesting–maybe it has something I can use to deal with my short-term memory–such as “What did I come in here to get?” :)

the professor and the Housekeeper

This was our library book group book. It is about a brilliant math professor with a problem. Due to an accident he has only 80 minutes of short term memory. She is an astute young housekeeper with a ten year old son. She has to reintroduce herself to him every morning when she arrives but they developed a beautiful relationship. It is an unusual story as the professor reverts to math problems whenever he is troubles which happens a lot. I will admit that I skimmed over most of the math part but it is a very interesting book and one that is easy to read. The hour of discussing it went by fast.

Thanks, Julie, for responding.

Hearing Aids, again

Posted by Julie Crum on March 7th, 2011 8:04 pm

The hearing aid I have (I only use one) is an Oticon Delta. It has a small behind-the ear part with a tube that goes into my ear and is very comfortable. You can click on this link to see more. Everyone’s experience is different and what worked for me might not be what’s right for someone else. Good luck to all!

Oops—– I meant 2010 is when I bought them.

Julie: I would like to know what brand of hearing aids you have been satisfied with????I bought new ones last Feb. (2020), cost $6000 and have never been satisfied with them. Please share the brand and info of yours.
