Reading

Posted by jackyjones on February 23rd, 2011 7:19 pm

I’m reading Stieg Larrson’s The Girl Who Played with Fire. It’s going kind of slow, I mostly read at bedtime and fall asleep, even though its rather exciting. He wrote 3 novels in his homeland of Sweden and died. I saw there was controversy about who gets all the money the books have earned. He had a “live-in, but since no wed, his father and brother seem to get it all. They were on CBS Sunday a while back. Jacky

I received an e-mail this morning telling me that there is an article in Womans Day written by Phyllis’s daughter. Apparently Phyllis is in Hospice now. You can read the article on line by going to Woman’s day.com I goggled Woman’s Day and clicked onto the search box and typed in Phyllis Green and got to the articles. There are two written by her daughter. There are some others also by a Phyllis. This new article in in the March issue. My store doesn’t carry Woman’s Day so I read it on line.

This morning, changing channels, I stumbled across a 1944 WWII movie “Since You Went Away,” Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, Shirley Temple, Joseph Cotten, Monty Woolley and a white bulldog that was a dead ringer for the one watching it beside me. I remembered seeing it 67 years ago when it came out. Today it was really strange–took me back to another place in time that has stayed with me all afternoon–the theater, the involvement in the story–I’ve never had anything quite like that. This is the only place I know people who would remember the actors as well as the sense of that time.

fingers, Jo

Posted by jackyjones on February 15th, 2011 1:56 pm

Wishing you quick healing, Jo. My left little and ring finger are still numb, I had Ulnar nerve surgery about 4 weeks ago. the Dr said that nerves can be slow, and I’m getting used to it, my elbow, where the incision was, is finally feeling better, but the whole left arm is very weak. I start therapy next week.

I’m in St Paul helping youngest daughter and family with driving ect, while parents are very busy. I don’t know how these young folks do it! I was a “stay at home” and thought I was busy.

Went to youngest grandaughter’s school yesterday and saw that kids still give valentines, but there is no official teacher envolvement in it, Savannah is 8 and one of 4 caucasion children in a class of 30. Most of the children in the whole school are Hmong, next

# is Spanish. The many of them are very good students and work hard and the kids seem to be free of color awareness. This is in St Paul, MN.

I’m almost done reading Faith Under Fire, an army chaplain’s memoir, by Roger Benimoff, with Eve Conant. our oldest Daughter gave it to me for my birthday and I find it very interesting. He was in Iraq, then a chaplain at Walter Reed, then a patient there. He suffered PTFD, but is well now and a chaplain at Methodists Hospitals of Dallas.

When all are in school, I have time to read, I did clean the refridgerator. Jacky

Hello

Posted by Owl36 on February 14th, 2011 5:06 pm

We have had house guests again. It was enjoyable but the time sure gets away.

I loved Pillars of the Earth. I read it quite a few years ago and it was an education for me.

Just one comment about our weather – it is supposed to rain most of this week. I am looking forward to that.

I had just about settled in for some reading when the house guests came. They were on their way to a tour of Egypt and got as far as NYC when it was canceled. They live in SC. Since they were already packed and ready to go they called and asks if they could come here. I am glad their trip was interrupted when it was rather than after they got to Egypt. This was my husband’s brother and his wife.

Take care everyone and hope your new year is going great. Georgianna

Super Bowl etc

I don’t like most of the ‘modern’ musical groups. And I absolutely loathed Christine Aguilera’s rendition of the National Anthem, even without the skipping a line etc. Why do the current crop of so-called ‘popular singers’ insist on changing the tempo, changing notes, stretching out the words, giving it ‘body English’ so the viewers will know how strongly they feel about the song. I guess they feel no patriotism or any such thing – smack ‘em upside the head – no other country would allow that. Their microphones would be turned off. Too bad they don’t do that here. I’d best change the subject.

I love the Packers and was thrilled to have them win. I like the Steelers, too, but wanted the Pack to take the trophy. ;)

Packers

Our youngest son in law is from WI, and was so thrilled. Clive and I enjoyed the game too. Not too impressed with the Peas, but I’m another generation. Jacky

Super Bowl

Posted by Darlyne C on February 8th, 2011 6:03 pm

I have become hooked on watching the Packers since spending time in WI with the Cheesheads and since I have been knitting Packer dog sweaters, one can’t help being happy that they won. I don’t know that much about football but am learning.

SUPER BOWL

Posted by CCNL on February 8th, 2011 4:50 pm

I thought I would see some posts about the Packers big win Sunday. It was a great game. When the Steelers made that two-point conversion I thought they were going to pull an upset. The Packers coach had a ring maker come to the hotel the night before the game to measure the players for their Super Bowl Rings. From some comments afterward that created a powerful image.
