Jo sent me an email saying that she was not able to get into GGOBIT. She is having trouble adjusting to her new laptop. She said to tell you that when her daughter, Suzanne, could come over and straighten things out for her that she would be back.

This morning Salman Rushdie is the three-hour interview. As is generally the case, I think something won’t be of interest and find it very interesting after all. There is so much more than the superficial reports of the reaction to Satanic Verses, including the origin of the title and the man’s thinking. The level of thoughtful questions that were emailed throughout the interview added a great deal of depth. Once again, I look forward to Saturdays and C-Span 2!
I agree on all points about Kindle. Yes, miss sharing some of the books but without the combination of reduced cost and large print option, I wouldn’t have read them to start with.

My library group discussed Cooking With Fernet Branca by ? Paterson. The two narrators, new neighbors, when trying not to antagonize each other drink Fernet Branca Which is a very high alcohol wine. The male cooks while he sings up made up aries. His recipies are outlandish. It is a very funny book. One of the men brought a bottle of the Fernet to the meeting and we all had a taste. I thought it tasted like cough medicine and couldn’t imagine drinking a whole bottle. I was told it is an acquired taste. It was an enjoyable meeting.
One of the small objections I have to Kindle is that I can’t pass the books on to friends. Also it is hard to count the tiny dots at the bottom to see how far you are in the book.
I was able to procure a copy of “The Prince of India” in two volumes in pretty good condition from ABE books and was reading it again after forty some years when I found out I could get it on Kindle for nothing. I’m now finishing the book on the Kindle and finding it much easier to read than in the tiny print of the old books. “Prince” was written in 1893 by Lew Wallace, the author of “Ben Hur”. It’s about the fall of Constantinople to the muslims. The main character, the prince is over a thousand years old and makes for a very interesting story. He has a daughter named Lael. I pronounce her name Loll.

I don’t have a Kindle; but I have an iPhone with the Kindle app on it. I have downloaded a large number of books onto it. I like the fact that I can ‘archive’ the book after reading it and then bring it forward if I want to read it again. I have downloaded some of my favorites that I also happen to have in hardback, such as “These is My Words”. That remains one of my favorites and I re read it about every year or so.
I have no idea about downloading books from the library; however, there are a number of classics that are free to download. I had not read “The Count of Monte Cristo” in a large number of years and it was good to re read it.
I do like the fact that you can find a book on Amazon.com and have it on your device in about a minute. Most best sellers are $9.99. But I find a large number of older books that are much less.
I am glad everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I did too. I spent it with my daughter, Granddaughter, Grandson and two great grandsons. One was born this past Sept. 8, so it was the first time I was able to hold him. Both boys are so sweet!
I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and has a wonderful and healthy new year.

Nothing to report; sounds like they had a good Thanksgiving.
I’m not too sure what all can be downloaded to the Kindle besides the various books. Don’t give up on the free books either, ladies, as there are some good ones in there. The books we have to pay for are less than the regular price and look at how many you can take in one item. I like that about it, for one thing. I do admit to missing a real book sometimes but I do have them here so the loss isn’t all that critical.
At any rate, I wish that all of the GGOBIT’ers have a good Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Thanks for the chuckle, Darlyne–you’re one of the busiest people around. As active as you are, your bones are probably very strong but they do like to check periodically. At least the bone density test is easy.

This is a very busy time for me. I have the regular things like bridge, movie dates with friends, Dr. visits etc. Today I had a bone density test and I am not sure why but my Dr. said it was time. My bones are one of the things in my body that feels fine, although I have grown a little shorter. I like that because my pants that were too short aren’t now. Christmas is just a busy time and I am getting ready for a trip to WI in a couple of weeks. Book group at library tomorrow. We are discussing Cooking With Fernet Branca. I wasn’t wild about the book and will be interesting to hear what others have to say about it.
I, too, check in every day hoping to see someone else has dropped by. A lot of my time has been covering and uncovering plants against night freezes followed by two or three warm days then back down to hard freezes. My bit planters of impatiens and geraniums have been so pretty I couldn’t bear to give them up after just one hard freeze when there are lots of nice days in between to enjoy them. It would be easier if we had regular winters–WASH MY MOUTH OUT!! I’d complain about that, too–certainly did when I lived where winters were long. This year is certainly proving to be hard in a lot of places. I need to smile and continue covering and uncovering for the present.

I can see that most of you must be trapped under the Christmas Tree, or boxes of ornaments, or boxes of books that you decided to delve into! Other than that, maybe you have been locked in the kitchen to prepare feasts to put in the freezer for the big Holiday Meal.
You do get missed when you don’t post for a couple (or five) days! LOL.

My train ride was from Trenton, NJ to Richmond, VA–about 5and 1/2 hours. Julie picked me up in Richmond and it is about a 35 minute to her home.
I have no idea where this entire year has gone. I know Sept and Aug. was taken up with my husband’s health issues. He seems to be doing fine now – not much energy but he feels okay and putters.
We had a really fun Thanksgiving. we also had good phone visits with our kids that weren’t here.
It is so good to read about all that you are doing. Darlyne where was your train trip? I think that would be heavenly and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the River Barge Cruise we took several years ago.

It is my understanding that you CANNOT download TO the Kindle, the ebooks provided by the library or other sources. My library, in detailing the ebook instructions, specifically states that it cannot be downloaded to the Kindle, which I see as the main drawback to the Kindle. If there is a way around this, it is certainly not something that I am aware of. So, with so many other choices today, and new readers coming on the market rapidly, I would go to some big box electronics store, or any electronics store with knowledgeable people, and ask to be given a demonstration of all the features of whatever reader, and ASK QUESTIONS!! In fact, you should be able to call or email Amazon/Kindle and ask these questions outright. Straight from the horse’s mouth. Your library should also “know” what devices they are able to download to. (sorry about dangling that “to”! LOL)
I’m not at all sure about audio books being downloadable to the Kindle from libraries. I know that my library, like many others, offers audio book downloads to a patron’s computer or other device (like mp3 player) but I’m not sure about Kindles. I haven’t played with mine too much yet.
Julie received one and said there is a way you can down load audio books from the library and there is a place to plug in ear phones. She hadn’t tried it yet though but they would be free.
I just got home. I had a lovely uncrowded train ride and Jenny was there to pick me up when it was over. She also had turkey noodle soup for me. Life is good.
the trees from my windows are so pretty. i hope you all had a nice thanksgiving and enjoyed your families. a little while ago i wrote and said i was given a Kindle for my birthday, i must say i don`t enjoy it too much. all the newer books one has to buy it and the free books are not that great. also all the different buttons on it are so small and my fingers are not that flexible enough to handle them. i would like to return the kindle, but have it now over 30 days. be carefull when you wish it for christmas, . when you get it. check it out after you get it an d see if you like it. maybe ikts only me, but i like the feel of a real book better.
For some reason I can’t sign in here under my own name. How was everyone’s Thanksgiving. Mine was great and now there are just three young people here but they will probably sleep till noon or so. Julie left for work so I have the house to myself. I may do something usefull–or not. Our thanksgiving was great, good food, good conversation and fun activities. The young people built a large fire in the back burning branches etc that had fallen. Marshmellows were toasted and consumed–before dinner. It didn’t seem to stop them from eating large amounts of dinner anyway.

The train was really packed. I thought I would miss the holiday crowd but so did everyone else I guess. It was pleasent anyway and it is good to be here. Grandsons made it. Tomorrow there will be five college students and four adults for dinner. I am looking forward to it.
Cranberries, pumpkin pie (anybody making mince pie?), mashed potatoes and gravy and I’m doing homemade rolls.
I too love train-travel. I hope to do one next year in the spring.
You’re off to a great holiday, Darlyne. I love train travel–it has been a long time since my last one. Thanks for reminding me of that delightful way of seeing the country.

I will be taking the train to Richmond in a while, and will be spending the week with Julie and family. (if any burglars are reading this, the house is being watched.) I have a book, can’t remember the exact name but something about Cooking with ??. It isn’t all about cooking and I will let you know how it is. I also have my knitting and a lunch so am ready for the 5-6 hour train ride. I really love going by train.
