Kindal

Posted by Darlyne C on November 30th, 2010 3:16 pm

Julie received one and said there is a way you can down load audio books from the library and there is a place to plug in ear phones. She hadn’t tried it yet though but they would be free.

I just got home. I had a lovely uncrowded train ride and Jenny was there to pick me up when it was over. She also had turkey noodle soup for me. Life is good.

the trees from my windows are so pretty.  i hope you all had a nice  thanksgiving and enjoyed your families.  a little while ago  i wrote  and said  i was given a Kindle for my  birthday,  i must say  i don`t enjoy it too much.   all the newer books one has to buy it and the free books are not that great.  also all the different buttons on it are so small and my fingers are not that flexible enough to handle them.  i would like to return the kindle, but have it now over 30 days.   be carefull when you wish it for christmas, . when you get it. check it out after you get it an d see if you like it.  maybe ikts only me, but  i like the feel of a real book better.

Darlyne again

For some reason I can’t sign in here under my own name. How was everyone’s Thanksgiving. Mine was great and now there are just three young people here but they will probably sleep till noon or so. Julie left for work so I have the house to myself. I may do something usefull–or not. Our thanksgiving was great, good food, good conversation and fun activities. The young people built a large fire in the back burning branches etc that had fallen. Marshmellows were toasted and consumed–before dinner. It didn’t seem to stop them from eating large amounts of dinner anyway.

Train ride

Posted by Darlyne C on November 24th, 2010 3:10 pm

The train was really packed. I thought I would miss the holiday crowd but so did everyone else I guess. It was pleasent anyway and it is good to be here. Grandsons made it. Tomorrow there will be five college students and four adults for dinner. I am looking forward to it.

Oh yum

Cranberries, pumpkin pie (anybody making mince pie?), mashed potatoes and gravy and I’m doing homemade rolls.

I too love train-travel. I hope to do one next year in the spring.

You’re off to a great holiday, Darlyne. I love train travel–it has been a long time since my last one. Thanks for reminding me of that delightful way of seeing the country.

off to VA

Posted by Darlyne C on November 23rd, 2010 8:06 am

I will be taking the train to Richmond in a while, and will be spending the week with Julie and family. (if any burglars are reading this, the house is being watched.) I have a book, can’t remember the exact name but something about Cooking with ??. It isn’t all about cooking and I will let you know how it is. I also have my knitting and a lunch so am ready for the 5-6 hour train ride. I really love going by train.

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving.

Cranberries

Posted by CCNL on November 22nd, 2010 12:32 am

Thanks, Julie–it is interesting that Wisconsin cranberries appeared for the first time (in my experience) in Texas. I’ll ask a friend in Houston if Wisconsin berries are there and if there are any Ocean Spray as well.

Cranberries!

Posted by Julie Crum on November 21st, 2010 9:43 pm

Candace, here is an interesting fact: the top three cranberry-producing states are Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and New Jersey. I lived in Massachusetts for seven years, in the town where Ocean Spray has its headquarters. There was a cranberry bog at the end of my street, and many in the town and even more in the surrounding counties. The interesting thing was that my mother (Darlyne) has three daughters–one in Wisconsin, one in New Jersey, and one in Massachusetts. I live in Virginia now, and our brother was totally out of the loop out in Texas. That’s my cranberry story!

CRANBERRIES

This is the first year I’ve seen cranberries from Wisconsin. Is this a matter of distribution or branching out? I thought maybe those of you in the Minnesota/Wisconsin area and/or New England might know. Heretofore most of them came from Ocean Spray, grown in New England. some were DelMonte. At least here in Cedar Park, TX, the only cranberries I’ve seen came from “Habelman Bros. Company, a family tradition since 1907.” They are exceptionally large and every berry was good–they’re simmering on the stove right now.

Cklicking

Posted by Co Jo on November 18th, 2010 7:21 pm

I too remember seeing that clicks are way down in all six areas, actually. I don’t understand it either – takes less than five minutes to click on six sites and do a good turn. I just hope that the food etc gets to the people, but I don’t stop clicking.

sites

Posted by bookwrm on November 18th, 2010 5:37 pm

I have, in the past, click on others of the charity sites. I don’t want to seem hard-hearted, but I somehow doubt that most of the food gets to the people who most need it. Especially if it is in a war-torn part of Africa, etc. I feel like the guys with the guns get the food and either use it themselves or sell on the blackmarket to folks who can’t afford to buy it in the first place.

Other sites

Joanne, while you’re at it, hope you will click on the others, assuming you get the same site I do that includes pet rescue, and others. They’re all worthwhile.

charity sites

it seems like when the Cancer Site was trying to accumulate a large number of clicks to get a “doubling” from sponsors, they went up for about 4 days, and suddenly, Pow! they are way way down. I don’t understand the reasoning either. I click on Breast Cancer Site, Literacy Site and Food.

CHARITY SITES

Posted by CCNL on November 17th, 2010 6:48 pm

I watch those, too. All of the sites are down and have been generally lower for several months. I always wonder what is the collective reason that on certain dates there are a lot and, conversely, why so few for a time after that. I click on all sites every morning, including the one identified as Primates that includes many other causes. I can’t write checks for all of them but it doesn’t cost anything to click.

“Breast Cancer Site”

Posted by bookwrm on November 17th, 2010 1:30 pm

I notice on the BCS that “clicks” have been way down the last few days. There was a spurt where every day was 10+, but now it’s in the 6.5 range. I know that a lot of us here all click on this site, when we remember it. Please don’t forget to click daily!

Thank you!

Weather

Yes, she is indeed – still 31 deg here at 10;48 a.m. and we do still have snow although it IS disappearing somewhat.

thanks for that ‘Joanne’, Joanne. “Preciate it. ;-D

I hope everyone else is doing well, staying warm, not being sick, etc. It’s too close to the holidays everyone looks forward to, so I do NOT allow any sickness. ;*)

Hockey game tonight and then daughter/g’daughter are having some kind of a food party on Sunday. I’ve never been to one and may leave all money at home, just on general principles.

All y’all take care now,
Jo
