Sisterhood Series

Posted by Judith on April 16th, 2010 9:10 am

I see on Amazon.com that there is one more in the ‘Sisterhood’ series. This one is called “Game Over” and will be out on June 29th. From the title, I imagine this one will wrap up the series. Unfortunately, so far, this one is not listed as being available on the Kindle.

The ending of My Sister’s Keeper was a real surprise–no way did I see that coming. Is that typical of her writing? If so, I’d like to read her other books.

You’ll enjoy SCOOP – I did very much. I suspect her Sisterhood series is over and done with and she has great plans for the SCOOP series. It has all the earmarks of being as good in its own way as the Sisterhood series is.

Now then, Jenny dear, how do I become a CO Jo and not a PA Jo — I’m not in Pennsylvania anymore.

Books!

Posted by Co Jo on April 12th, 2010 3:15 pm

I just love the things! There are a couple of new “Precious” books out which I have on my Kindle. I do like Debbie Macomber’s stories too. They seem to likely to really happen.

We’re having some lovely spring weather too – daughter and SIL went to Lowe’s and bought out the nursery I think! She came and got me yesterday and I went over and helped get things planted, pulled, cut back and generally supervised. Had a great fun day.

For supper they fixed a Dutch dish called Nasi, easy on the ‘s’ – make it really soft. I liked it very much. Rice, the rest of the ham they had for Easter, fried egg and then a packet of spices etc that really made the dish. Paul says they had it for Saturday night supper probably once a month or so. It was very good.

I am having fun and games w/the maintenance people and the Mirasol complex manager regarding the heat in my apartment. I had the thermostat set at 70, which is a low as it will go when the AC is on; I don’t know how they (meaning the Mirasol maintenance folks) can block the settings like that – at night I’d have it cooler if I could). When I got home, the inside the apt temp was 83°. The corridor was warm so opening my entry door would do no good. I turned on the fan, opened the balcony door – windows were already open but it was still 1 a.m. before I got to sleep. I’m told I’m right over the furnace room and they are apparently looking to see what can be done. In the meantime, I told the maintenance man who came this morning to spray silicon on the windows so I could open them easier that I am most unhappy with the situation, 83 deg is much too hot for anyone to try to sleep and I was about to the point of going to a motel and sending Mirasol the bill. I’ve emailed the Apt complex mgr with some detail and I have started keeping a log of the temp at various times of the day.

My apt was one of several to be ‘checked’ by a representative of one of the finance organizations to build the place and apparently she was happy with it all. I murmured to the honcho lady who came along about the temp thing and right away she got on her cell phone and called the head Maintenance guy. He is supposed to be coming over one day this week. She told me to call her if they DON’T show up. No problem with THAT! I am totally fed up with this — I get cross and bitchy when I have to try to sleep in an 80° room. Temp finally hits 75 about 5 a.m.

I guess I’ve mentioned this to you all – I hope Bill, the maint supervisor is ready for a tirade. I’ll be nice, etc but he will definitely know I’m unhappy and at the end of my rope.

Stay cool all, it’s beginning to be a problem here! ;-)

Nevada Barr

Posted by Darlyne C on April 12th, 2010 8:36 am

I just listened to a Nevada Barr cd for the second time. I was half way through before I realized I had heard it but kept on because I had forgotten so much of it. This one was Border something and took place in the Big Bend National Park in Texas. We had been there a number of times and tried to sign up for the river raft run on the Rio Grand but were too late. This book was written after Nine Eleven and after that border was closed. Before the area had been open as it was in Canada and the closing caused problems fro the natives in the area. It is a spectacular park but don’t go there in the summer time unless you plan to be cooked.

Two Books on CD

The PD James book was A Certain Justice, 15 hours! We finished it on the way home, and started Hope’s Boy, by Andrew Bridge. He was taken from his mentally ill mother at the age of 7, “survived one of our countries most notorious children’s facilities, Andrew was thrust into a savagely loveless foster family. Deprived of the nurturing he needed, Andre clung to the academics and the kindness of teachers. Ultimately, Andrew earned a scholarship to Wesleyan, went on to Harvard Law School, ad became a Fulbright Scholar.

Andrew has dedicated his life’s work to helping children living in poverty and in the foster care system. He defied the staggering odds set against him, and here in this brutally honest and inspirational memoir, he reveals who Hope’s boy really is.”

We arrived home before as he was graduating from high school, so have not finished it yet, but the story surely makes one thankful for parents.

We also listened to a Debbie McComber book, which Clive liked best. I think its called 20 Wishes or Dreams.

We have no snow, and I saw a robin this evening, and there are spring scents in the air. Jacky

I think it is summer here temp 85° but it will cool off in the next few days. Makes one want to plant something. I got back from WI Tuesday evening after a long day. After being in a stupor most of yesterday I feel almost normal today. It was good to be with my youngest and the people I know there and the dogs but it is also good to be home. I gave up on the latest Kingsolver book and am reading a Harlan Coban mystery I picked up at the airport. I like his mysteries and have read a number of them.

Thanks Jo

I am thankful they don’t get passed around!

I finished reading Fern Michaels’ latest book in the Sisterhood series. I’m afraid she is done with that series. SCOOP promises to be a good one, series that is. Four senior ladies are getting together and the rich one of the bunch plans to take all of them to LA where she hopes to buy a gossip rag (read supermarket paper!) in order to save her daughter’s job. I hope she follows through with her sense of humor, makes her books good and interesting to read, as well as having a decent plot.

Happy Easter from Tallahassee

We are on our way home, had a very nice time at Daytona Beach. Our son, wife and 3 teens visited, I went with them to Sea World, and Clive joined us for a MN Twins spring baseball game. the time share is on the ocean, and its exciting for us “land locked” to see and hear the waves.

Our middle daughter came the last week and talked us into para sailing, 2000 ft up. My husband told the boat person that he is 78, thinking it a record, but no, they have had folks in their 80+s under that umbrella.

The temp today was 89, our son tells us the Red River back home is still way out of its banks, but our village dike held again and Oslo is no longer an island.

I read John Grisham’s The Associate, and now am reading Jodi Picoult’s Handle With Care. At first I thought she was repeating My Sister’s Keeper, but no, this pertains to different human problems and decisions.

We also have several CD books, we are half done with a PD James mystery, she is over 80 years of age and wrote this recently.

We had a nice time with Darlyne’s and my cousin, Kenny, and family, who live in St Augustine, but are counting the days until they leave for The Lake of the Woods in our cool MN, where they spend the summer.

Easter

Posted by Jerry Horgan on April 4th, 2010 2:08 pm

Happy Easter everyone! A beautiful, sunny but cool Easter Sunday here. Quiet! No one around. Trying to stay out of the Easter basket from Shereé. I’ve got John Grisham’s “Ford County Stories” on the kindle…just started it, gave up on “The Man Who Ate His Boots”; more than I ever wanted to know about exploring for the Northwest Passage. Brrrrrr! Tonight I’ll finish watching “Return to Lonesome Dove”. Started it last night and it got too long.
Huggz all,
Jerry

Nice evening

Well, surprise to us – we had a touch of snow this late morning but it stopped faster than I could type it and is now gone. Still quite chilly however.

At any rate, I hope you all have a happy and blessed Easter.

Nice evening

I enjoyed sitting outside last night watching my daughters 6 labs racing around the yard, playing keep-away and retrieving a ball. They were really having a great time. I hated to go in.I think they did also but were tired and ready for their cages except Barbie, the retired one. She is in the house now. It was raining and cool this morning but the sun is shining now. I baked a chocolate cake for tomorrow and now am going to prepare oven mashed potatoes that can just be reheated tomorrow. We are having company. It takes me a while to cook now as I am not used to this kitchen and I hardly ever cook or bake anymore, except for cookies.

Sleep

And so, since I slept so well the night before, last night it was 4 a.m. before I fell asleep. I foresee a nap in my not-too-distant future.

And it’s still chilly today.

Holy Cow!!!!!!!!

Ye gods, it’s back to the fireplace today. I slept like a log last night – it was cool and got cooler and was 67 in the apt when I got up. And I slept in – HEAVENLY!!!

And here I thought spring was here – didn’t we see the first day of spring not too long ago?!!?!?

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
