Greetings

Having handed out a box of 48 Snicker bars I want to wish you all a happy Halloween! I’m still plodding through “Moby Dick” and enjoying that which I haven’t read in forty or fifty years. Never realized there was so much philosophy in tome of Melville’s.

posting

Darlyn, you are not posting too much, just keep on writing,  otherwise  it falls asleep again.  you can be very proud of your grandson with good reason.  don`t we just love our grandchildren and greatgrandkids.             sorry to say, two of my grandchildren have lost their jobs and can not find new jobs and are forced to live with their parents for now.  my daughter moved to be near me and moved from  milwaukee to here and can not find a job here also.    its pretty sad now for people who want to work, hopefully it will change and the economy improves.  my rent here in the retirement home was raised too.

Serena by Ron Rash

Posted by Darlyne C on October 28th, 2009 3:32 pm

I realize that I am posting too much here but I just finished reading Serena and think many of you would like it
It takes place in the Smokey Mountain region and is of the logging industry, the destruction of the area and the men who tried to save it. Serena and her husband are very strong people, and head the logging company. Actually she does as much as he in this business which is unusual for that era. Among other things she trains an Eagle to hunt rattle snakes. I thought that was just fiction but learned that it could be done. There is much to this story and it becomes very brutal at times. For me on the most part it was a page turner.

comic book

What could be more appropriate for the grandson of a dedicated reader than publishing a book that benefits a school. I know you’re very proud, Darlyne.

grandson

Posted by Darlyne C on October 27th, 2009 9:17 am

Actually it was the publisher that donated part of it’s profits but they were from my grandson’s book signing events that they charged for. (he is having book signings that aren’t fund raisers) His Mother can correct me if I am wrong. He isn’t having the school named after his comic because it is too hard to pronounce, or impossible but there will be a plaque naming him.

What a grandson!!!

Posted by jackyjones on October 26th, 2009 11:12 pm

How wonderful he is using his funds so generously!!! What could be better than schools! I’ve tried to read his comics too, and don’t understand many of them either. Apparently many do, however.

The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo has some really rough stuff I’m finding as I read. Revenge for sexual violence, but I’m curious to see what happened to Harriot, missing for many years.

brag alert

Posted by Darlyne C on October 26th, 2009 7:25 pm

My grandson raised enough money with his book signing that the profits from those fund raisers were enough to build a school in Laos. The company that published his book donated part of the profits for this purpose. These profits were made in three weeks of book signing tours. His book is comics from his web comic and it is a geek thing, about physics romance and other stuff. I only understand some of the comics. I bought two of his books because I thought no one else would. I was wrong.

Musty books

Posted by CCNL on October 26th, 2009 9:00 am

I found this online–I googled musty book odor. There are several answers–this one happened to be one.

How do I eliminate or reduce a musty odor in a book?

“Our neighbors at the Northeast Document Conservation Center say this: There is no guaranteed way to remove the musty smell from old books, but there is a strategy that may be successful. This musty smell is most often noted in books that have been moldy or mildewed in the past. The first step is to create an enclosed chamber. This is most easily done by using two garbage cans, one large (with a lid) and one small. The object to be “deodorized” should be placed in the smaller can, which is then placed inside the larger can. Some type of odor-absorbing material should then be placed in the bottom of the larger can. Odor-absorbing materials to try include baking soda, charcoal briquettes (without lighter fluid), or kitty litter. The lid should then be placed on the larger can, and the chamber should be left for some time. You will need to monitor periodically to see how long the materials need to be left inside the chamber.”

For some reason that posted before I was finished. I meant you could try that.

musty books

After the Red River flood in ND the electricity went off in many places and people left so fast they had no time to empty or care for their refrigerators. It was advised that they place a pie tin of fresh coffee grounds in the refrigerator and that seemed to remove the smell. You could t

Some of my books smell musty. Do any of you know a magical way to make them smell good again? Thanks. Georgianna

Sorry to hear some of you have had coughs and such. Take care of yourself. Georgianna

cough

Posted by Darlyne C on October 24th, 2009 8:06 pm

I think I may have thought it a cold because my friend was given the Z-pack and they said it was just a virus, and that was bad enough. She is still miserable and coughing.

I am reading Serena which is our book group pick. I can’t remember the author and the book is upstairs. So far it is good in parts, about the lumber business and state park take overs etc. I find some parts of it quite boring but kinda speed read through those. I went to a morning seminar on memory this morning. I don’t think it helped that much but did have some good tips like how imprortent exercises is.

Cough

Posted by PA Jo on October 24th, 2009 11:22 am

Mine wasn’t a bad cold. That would have been MUCH more acceptable. No, this was the flu trying to become something worse. Fortunately it didn’t become anything other than flu. That C-pack thing is wondrous. I may have HAD a slight cold but that wasn’t the problem.

I read some but actually it was just rereading books I already had, like the Sisterhood series by Fern Michaels. A group of six women, financed by a VERY wealthy woman and backed by an ex-British spymaster, band together and right the wrongs suffered by them. The wealthy woman’s daughter was victim of a hit-and-run by a Chinese diplomat who was then sent back to China and escaped punishment…but only for a while. The ladies caught up to him, thanks to the spymaster AND a Chinese elder. Excellent stories and I didn’t have to think. I didn’t have the brainpower to think, anyhow. ;-)

Catch up for today - except I am finally able to go to the hockey games after missing opening night and the night after. I LOVED it.

Take care all and stay healthy.

Flu shots

Posted by Darlyne C on October 22nd, 2009 10:10 pm

I did get the shot and do every year. I think that cough thing isn’t the flu though. It is a bad cold. I will keep my fingers crossed that I don’t get it.

Flu shots etc

Posted by PA Jo on October 22nd, 2009 9:40 pm

I dislike shots but I dislike the flu worse, so I do get the shot. I have a tendency to bronchitis and I think the shot helps me not get that. I’ve had it twice and didn’t much care for it as a form of recreation! OR as a reason to stay home form work, either.

It’s been cold here - temps today in the 30s. I’m in a second floor apartment and I can thank my neighbor downstairs for helping me keep my apt warm. Heat travels up as we all know and while I’m not sure how it gets thru concrete floors, carpeting and/or vinyl flooring, I’m glad it does. I turn my thermostat way down, like 68, and still stay quite cozy. During the day, I’m inclined to turn the heat off. I was chilly this morning however, so the heat stayed on but at about 72, I think I had it.

Sounds to me as those of you who’ve HAD this are getting over it; I do hope so. Time to do cough syrup and eyedrops and such stuff we seniors get to indulge ourselves in (!), so I’ll say g’nite for now.

Take care all. This is gonna be a cold one I think.

So thankful you are better, Jo. I’ve had pneumonia quite a few times, have an area in my rt lung that has bronchictisis, sp, bit that antibiotic you mentioned works so well. The last time I had this was in Texas when we still had a motor home.

And I surely hope you don’t get it, Darlyne. We can’t get the flu shots, they had 30 of the reg. flu ones, but we didn’t go to the Sr center, and probably would have been too late anyway. And you had the shot, Jo, so how much good does it do.

Anyway, glad you are mending, Jacky

Flu

Posted by Darlyne C on October 22nd, 2009 10:13 am

I took a friend of mine to the ER yesterday. She couldn’t get into her Dr. and was coughing so much she couldn’t sleep. Her chest xray was clear so they gave her an antibiotic and sent her home. I imagine it is the same thing you have Jo. I hope I don’t get it as I was in a closed car with her. She wasn’t coughing then and I tried not to breath but thats kinda hard. The pharmacist and his helper both said they had the same thing.

FLU

Posted by CCNL on October 21st, 2009 10:36 pm

The bad cough seems to be the most common thread with this year’s flu, Jo. Glad you’re recovering. At least you should be well protected from it now.

Jenny, I deleted your two posts that were in the “saved” file - you have clicked the “Save” button rather than “Publish” …. it was no trouble.

thanks

thank you for welcoming back, its good to be back. yesterday we all got the Flue

Frankly, m’dear, I don’t give a —- hoot!

Posted by PA Jo on October 21st, 2009 4:20 pm

I’m recuperating from the flu, ladies and Bohl, so I’m not at 100% although that is going up toward the 70% mark. I am feeling much better, thanks to the C-pack, but coughing like I’ve never coughed before. Vicks 44 Chesty Cough Syrup is very good!!!!!!!! And yes, I DID get a flu shot. Fat lot of good it did me!

And because of the above, I’ve nothing to report. I missed opening day and the day after games of my hockey team but I would have infected all 5,289 seats plus the teams and the usual workers/sellers, etc. Daughter Suzanne did bring me the ‘freebie’ which was a Budweiser pint glass. What with the price ya pay for seats like that, I keep the freebies! I don’t give ‘em to whoever has my ticket. So there!

And yes, I am feeling grouchy!

I hope all of you have managed to avoid it; I have no idea where I got it.

Take care all and trust me, I AM doing the same.

My sister loaned me The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and I like the beginning, which is all I’ve read. I’m also listening to Judge and Jury by Patterson, I’m not sure about it yet, have only gotten through the first chapter.

We’ve done all that will business: with one farming son, and three daughters, its hard to be completely even, but we’ve tried to be as fair as possible and enable Craig to keep farming. Also have living wills.

We did catch a short glimpse of the sun this afternoon, maybe tomorrow, its supposed to clear. Jacky

Nor’easter

Posted by Darlyne C on October 16th, 2009 7:57 am

We are having back to back ones and it is rainy, windy and cold. A good day to stay home knit and read but I have to go out. I am finally getting some legal stuff done like checking my will and power of attorney etc. I have been putting this off for a long time. I also have a living will I will have him check. In the meantime I decided to give up on a book I had started, Knit two. I had read the authors first book, the knitting Club and liked it but this one doesn’t grab me. I have a mystery I will start.

Hi and Barbara D.

Posted by jackyjones on October 15th, 2009 11:50 pm

I will greet Clive from you, Jan, thanks! I like the idea of volunteering too, I’m sure there are lonely folks in our small village, I did visit an older widow who lives near us, I needed an address from her, and had such a good time talking with her. It helps that we know so many of the same people now, and even more so, in years past. She asked me to come again, and I plan to do so.

And several of my friends read Barbara Delinsky’s book, I just remembered that I read The Secret Between Us by her. It was interesting.

Another rainy, cold day, but there is real talk of sunshine this weekend. Our son finished the sugar beet harvest, and the pinto bean crop is off, but there are many acres yet to be done, so we really need an Indian Summer.
