STORAGE

Posted by CCNL on May 26th, 2009 5:13 pm

Jo. is there any possibility of moving to a two-bedroom, when one becomes available? I wonder if the design was intended for free-standing shelves/closets, the way many houses were built years ago. It allowed for rearranging the furniture–something my mother and I loved to do.

Weather

Posted by PA Jo on May 26th, 2009 12:19 pm

I checked in here to see what Loveland weather is supposed to be like (cool) so I’ll know what to wear as I have a few errands to run and a dr appt.

I REALLY hate the lack of any kind of storage here; others have also said the same thing. Sigh. The joys of senior housing.

Argh!

Dubai

Posted by cajun lady on May 26th, 2009 8:41 am

I confess to having never heard of Dubai until a few months ago my grand-

daughter and family bought a beautiful home here in Louisiana and the previous owners were being transferred to Dubai—-hence the reason for

selling.  I had to research to find out about Dubai, and by all accounts it is

a beautiful place. However, the people moving there have not been very happy there -homesick–and miss their home back here in Louisiana. That is understandable.  I have no idea why I have double-spacing in some places here.     Joy

Dubai

Posted by jackyjones on May 23rd, 2009 11:14 pm

Dubai is south of Iran, across the Persian Gulf and east of Saudi Arabia. The opulence of the tiny spot is amazing, our daughter’s friends said. It’s mostly “oil” money. There are man made islands in the shape of palm trees.

A lovely day in Oslo, but we drove north to a high school graduation party and the damage from the flood is really sad. Electric high line poles broken off from the huge pieces of ice. Normally our Red River’s ice cover breaks up and flows north before the river rises much, but this year’s cold temps kept the sheet intact until the waters had risen over much of the land and then we had strong winds, it was like mini ice bergs running wild.

Our son and men are working long hours trying to get seeds in the soil of fields dry enough to work. And more rain forecast tomorrow evening.

Darlyne, I see your brother and Jan have planted flowers on your folks graves. The cemetary looks fairly good considering it was covered with water a few weeks ago. We always have a Memorial Day program at our American Legion Mon. Our Ladies auxilliary serves a lunch.

Dubai and moving

Posted by PA Jo on May 22nd, 2009 1:11 pm

Dubai is one of the Arab countries although I admit that I’m not sure where it’s located somyself. A couple from Loveland are also going there. In fact, if I remember correctly, they are actually moving there–missionaries, I believe. He’s a doctor and she’s a minister.

I’m on Suzanne’s laptop with its smaller keyboard which is also flat and not as accommodating as a regular keyboard. At one time, I thought I wanted a laptop — not so.

I have been taking my time with unpacking and it is down now to getting my shredder out of the box and figuring out where to put it, and shelves for the craft closet. Today I’m dog-sitting for Suzanne. Paul is in Toronto Ontario Canada for 3 weeks and his company has flown her back for the long weekend. Quite generous of them; I don’t know if they also flew other wives. At any rate, g’daughter Jenna is in CA returning on Sunday. I don’t remember if S comes back Sunday or Monday, but I’m almost 100% sure it’s Monday. And then I believe she will be going to SoCal for training for her new job. She’ll work here in CO. I think the trainees are allowed to return home every other weekend. By then of course Jenna will be back and my dog sitting days will be over until June 13/14. She participates actively in the Relay for Life cancer drive, she’s a survivor. Their shindig comes on those two days and I’ll again be dog-sitting as both S and J, husband Paul too (his sister is a survivor) will be doing both days.

I have no idea what else is happening but I’m sure I’ll find out. ;-)

And that’s all I know.

Dubai

I Don’t even know where that is. Maybe I shouldn’t reveal that.

Jo, remember that you have forever to unpack. Enjoy your new surroundings. They sound great. I am going to put my flag up today. Thats the big news from Princeton.

Dubai?

Posted by jackyjones on May 21st, 2009 11:23 pm

I’ve not spelled it right, but our middle daughter and hubby have friends who agreed to teach in Dubai taking a year’s leave from the job in Grand Forks, ND. They didn’t last the year. The wife left before her husband, saying the whole culture is so extremely different, it was beyond describing. They are back in ND.

We are finally getting some relatively warm temps, well its almost 70 in the afternoon. Our son is planting his crops as fast as the tractors and men can keep up. We have a short growing season, you know.

Our trip to the assembly was worth while, one vote passed by 2—ours. But the real decision will be by the “general assembly” in Aug in Mpls.

We finished the Robin Cook book driving to and from, plus a few other trips. Its such an easy way of reading, and traveling.

So glad you are nearly done unpacking, Jo, your new dwelling sounds ideal. And good to see other familiar faces, names too.

UNPACKED

Sounds like you have about everything you might want in that community, Jo. I have to ask, can you have a pet there? Not having to clear snow or leaves or whatever might be in season is great. It will be fun exploring the area in and outside of your immediate community.

AOL

Posted by PA Jo on May 21st, 2009 5:53 pm

I still don’t like AOL. I went from there to Microsoft Internet Explorer and after a while, I had some problems with that so my browser now is Flock. So far, so good.

Grocery carts????

Posted by PA Jo on May 21st, 2009 5:52 pm

Not the kind you see in markets, but the heavy wire ones you see advertised in catalogs etc for putting your bags of groceries or ?? in. They have wheels. Most useful.

Moving!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by PA Jo on May 21st, 2009 5:51 pm

It’s getting better folks - I have actually seen another 2′ x 8′ section of carpeting!!!!!! My daughter was over a couple of afternoons ago and she moved five boxes of books, which we went through first (or rather she did and found five or so she wanted and which naturally I gave her), over to the paperback library which is right across from me. She has been so much help to me. I can only move just so many of those heavy (but only to me, daughter and g’daughter both say) book boxes and then I’m done. I plan to move the craft boxes into my bedroom behind the door (I’ll move a lightweight one first and make sure it fits). At least maybe I can get to the kitchen easier. ;-) On the other hand, it’s just about the only exercise I get. LOLOL

I have 3 craft boxes total to go through, two boxes of knick-knacks which may get to Suzanne’s garage for storage! and the box with my shredder in it. Suzanne says we may have a shredding party some day - be a good idea!

And I guess I’m as done as I can be until I get some shelving in the one closet. Storage here in the apartments is at a real premium. If a two-bedroom apt had been available, that would have worked out much better.

Anyhow, I’ve been across to the Event Center. It has a HUGE room used for the Wii games and also for the resident council meetings; it’s like a huge lounge. There is a bistro where morning coffee klatches are; cereal is available for a nominal fee and coffee is brewed. I’ve not been a coffee drinker in eons, but I had some hazelnut coffee w/milk after the council meeting and it was very VERY good. The leasing agent and activity person have offices in this building, also. An exercise room and meeting room and restrooms, of course, complete the building usage. It is probably some 50-60 feet or so from the apartment building itself but as Suzanne says, there is seldom lots of snow but the snow removal is done so we don’t have to fuss about that.

A monthly schedule of activities planned along with a newsletter is published and put under the door of each apartment. I’m not sure how they get distributed to the homes (rental and/or purchased) but everyone in the Mirasol community gets them. And the activities planned run the gamut from Fit Walking to blood pressure testing to foot care to tai chi to sitting yoga and van rides to any and all stores.

I needed an additional peephole at the door because the previously installed on is four inches higher and I can’t see through it even standing on my toes. I got one yesterday and the young fella who did that also hung my curtain rods (not the curtains themselves although he offered. He said he wasn’t supposed to so I should keep very quiet about that. I can do that, too.)

I can only say that I’m hoping to walk off some of my extra avoirdupois. The only thing I don’t have to go after is the morning paper. It gets delivered. Most of the apts have a small table (12″x12″ and furnished by the apt dweller) by their front door with some kind of decoration on it and the papers are usually put there. Mail is on the first floor just off the lobby. The hardcover library is there. AND thankfully there is an elevator. Grocery carts and a cart with a piece of plywood on it for larger stuff is provided for resident use.

The entry doors to the building are locked on the weekend and residents have a keycard which opens the doors. All doors are opened with those pushbutton things for opening automatic doors for the handicapped and that is convenient. Oh yes, and the doorknobs in the apartments are the lever kind and not doorknobs. Way nicers.

OK - that’s it for today. When and if I get ALL the boxes out of here, I’ll let you know and we can have a congrats! party.

Frrustration

Posted by Owl36 on May 21st, 2009 12:00 am

I am about to get the hang of the new computer but this version of AOL is so different. I wish we could get a printed manual to look at. I called various bookstores today to see if I could find an AOL for Dummies. No but I could order one and of course I can do that from home. I wanted it NOW. Mostly I am a patient person but something like this has become such a part of our life and you can’t make it work to suit you, then I want to fix it NOW.

Oh, well, take care all of you. Jo, I kinda envy you moving. We really have stuff and I do think it might be easier if you had to sort it, move and then continue to sort as you unpack.

friends and eyes.

Posted by Darlyne C on May 20th, 2009 6:01 pm

I am happy to see you back here again too.

As for escaping the lasar treatment for my eyes I was hoping that would clear up my vision which has gotten a little worse. It isn’t that usual film, it is just aging eyes and the muscle tone isn’t what it used to be. My vision isn’t that much worse but I need stronger reading glasses to do the Sunday cross word puzzle. As a friend said,”you just take your ten pills and get on with it”.

FRIENDS

Posted by CCNL on May 20th, 2009 11:27 am

Glad to hear from Joy and Garvin–hope you can get back on without a problem. Darlyne, glad you got off with drops, although having that film removed is simple. I had it in both eyes, about two or three years apart.

Jo, could you get a little storage unit from Ikea to hang above your shelf? A friend has solved a couple of storage problems that way. Or maybe some roller drawer carts to go under the shelf on each side. I got some from Office Max on sale and took the rollers off of two I wanted stationary and left them on for two I use in other areas. See how we free are with solutions to problems we have no real knowledge about–at least you know we’re paying attention. :)

I am getting my eyes zapped this AM, just the film that grows sometimes. I will read The Road by Cormic McCarthy while waiting forever in the Dr. office.

Old friends

Posted by cajun lady on May 19th, 2009 9:48 pm

It is so good to see “old” friends.  I have been away for quite a while—-finally gave up AOL and went to att.net and have had nothing but trouble with that.  I did lurk and read your posts, but could not post.  I have been in the process of trying to get back on, but it has been hard. I see old names—Myrnart, Jo, of course, Leah Leo, and countless others.  To all, I say I am glad to be back. Jo, by the way, was one of the very first acquaintances I had on the computer many years ago.

As for me - - - -

Posted by PA Jo on May 19th, 2009 4:58 pm

I’ve got a ton of stuff to put away and/or put in the dishwasher. Suzanne and I went to Sam’s and then to Walmart. She didn’t really have to do either one but asked if I wanted to go. Naturally I said yes.

I’m down to just 3 craft boxes and more book boxes. I need to get these across the hall to the ‘library’ and out of my way. I told Gayla, the chief ‘librarian’ of the place that when she empties the boxes, she can given them back to me - I have a source who needs book boxes.

And so it goes - I need shelves in the one closet for my draft stuff (I miss my big walk-in closets in PA) and also a upper cabinet for over this so-called desk shelf. No drawers, just this shelf. The powers that be have asked for suggestions for the next unit to be built and I have suggested that one. All the counters are high - short people are going out of style, I guess.

More later - - -

This from Garvin

Posted by PA Jo on May 19th, 2009 4:53 pm

< < Hello everyone ~~~
As for me, I am reading Dickens's Little Dorrit ! On my new Kindle. I just may not catch up with modern literature for awhile. I am so enchanted with my new gadget which holds the complete works of Dickens, Kipling, Longfellow, Wordsworth, all 15 Oz books, etc etc. I am having more fun reading them --- much more comfortable for bed reading than a clumsy book!
Will one of you please forward this to our "Book Group"? I can't seem to find it on my new version of AOL. (Yes, I must confess that I still prefer to stay with AOL, bothersome as it is. My address there is too widely distributed to change. But I do miss our Book Group conversations -- especially when I have something to say!)

I think Garvin forgot to click on “reply to all” when she sent that email. Anyhow, here she is.

Hello

Posted by Owl36 on May 19th, 2009 3:52 pm

Thanks to Jo, for directing me here. I tried the things she said but think I misspelled Ggobit. I did find numerous other Ggobit places though. I have missed your posts. I can’t seem to gt caught up with anything and now trying to learn this new computer is very time consuming. I know I will be happy when I learn a bit more about it. Georgianna

What I found

Posted by Darlyne C on May 19th, 2009 12:03 pm

A new way to spell read.

ggobit

Posted by Darlyne C on May 19th, 2009 10:40 am

I just googled ggobit and see that there are other websites with that name and one is a financial thing so I think that ad was posted by mistake.

Nevada Barr has written a new mystery and this one takes place in Big Bend National Park. I have camped there a few times, once in the summer which was a mistake, and am anxious to reed her book. It is being held for me at the library.

The web master, Jenny says that she could fix it so the general public is blocked but then we would also have a hard time getting here====or a harder time anyway. I think as long as it doesn’t happen too often it is OK just the way it is. like the title of a book I am reading.

WHO?

Posted by CCNL on May 17th, 2009 9:46 pm

I believe this the same one who posted something off the wall before. I don’t know why or how she/he gets in here. I think Jo said she thought someone had posted here by mistake, but that doesn’t explain who and how. As far as I know, no one knows. Maybe we should ask the one who set this up for us–can’t come up with her name this minute. Maybe we’ve been hacked.
