Motor cross is riding an off road motor cycle on a race course that has many curves, jumps and other dangerous stuff. I happened to come across a race on TV and was appalled that my grandson is doing that. There is a picture in his room of him in an accident and the motor cycle is on top or him. He wasn’t hurt. They do wear a lot of protective gear, but still—.
I enjoyed the term “Chick Magnet” I spose it works that way! And, Darlyne, what is motor cross? I know what snow boarding is, two grandsons prefer it to skis, but I’ve never seen boarding, it sounds harder. And so glad to hear you like Obama’s book, Jerry, I’m listening to him and the vp right now talking about middle-class job problems. Surely hope for the best! I’ve have not started People of the Book yet, half done with On a Someday. Roxy Henke has really researched grocery store ownership. A Super Target is coming to the small town in ND in the story, and it will no doubt affect local stores.
It amazes me how writers have to research, even something like running a grocery store. I looked at the aisles and checkouts differently in Hugo’s, used to be Piggly Wiggly, when I was shopping this week.
We got up to zero today, but lost the sun to clouds.

Last years favorite book of mine.
I just finished reading Barack Obama’s “Dreams From My Father” and it’s a wonderful insight into the man. Everyone should read this book by our new president. If I had any doubts about his character before, I certainly don’t now.
I’ve just started “People of the Book” and it promises to be a page turner. Geraldine Brooks is an Australian author and so far seems to be a story teller after my own heart. Too early to tell but will keep you informed.
Huggz all,
Jerry
Whats everyone reading? With the bad weather here in the East there must be time to read now. I am still on HaHa by King. It is not a real page turner but interesting enough to keep at it. I am also listening to a Gresham tape, the Last Juror. I am not a Gresham fan but it is OK to listen.
Jo, are you still sorting and packing. What have you decided about the car? We want to keep up with your move. After all, we were with you in Albuquerque, two locations in Texas, Maryland and Pennsylvania so we’ll be moving with you to Colorado, virtually speaking.

Jacky, “in my day” an athlete’s injury was in today’s terms “a chick magnet.” I recall some basketball and track injuries with casts and crutches that attracted much admiration from the girls for the stoic courage of the injured young men. Hope things haven’t changed and all the injuries are healing well.
Candace
Sorry about your grandson’s injuries. It seems to be par for the course. I have a grandson who competes in motor cross and I worry about him but he loves it. He has been injured a number of times snow boarding but keeps on. I am playing bridge today and hope to get home before the on coming storm they are predicting. I hope it misses us. I am tired of shoveling ice.
Erik, 14, 130 lbs, won all three meets, but sprained his elbow in the last one, so he’s healing, and his brother, Craig, 17, still is healing, broken collor bone, so we won’t be attending high school sports for a while. its dreadfully cold, anyway.
We had our first Beth Moore DVD meeting at our house this am. A friend suggested her, and she is a dynamic speaker, everyone seemed to enjoy the presentation on Daniel and Babylon. She’s a national speaker from Houston, TX. There is a bit of homework, which I really enjoy.
Jacky
What an intriguing title–I’ll look it up, Jacky.

I bought our ND’s writer’s new book, On a Someday. Roxy Henke has a way of making me forget that I’m reading. This story is about our dreams of doing something “someday”. I’ve only read the first chapter, but it won’t take this slow reader long to finish it and loan it to my next door neighbor, who introduced me to Roxy’s work, After Anne, several years ago
2 below this am, but the sun is shining, and our 14 year old Erik, is wrestling in Grand Forks this evening and tomorrow.

I have been curious about The Reader, and will try to get it. And recently read an article about the real Dewey, and the replacement. A nice story.
We were so surprized to find the HBO coverage of the Lincoln Mem. ceremony. I even checked to see if its in our cable program, its not, but was fun to see the performers. and the huge crowd! What an exciting time!
I”m reading Storm over the Land, as i mentioned before, and Obama admires his running the nation during the Civil War, a very, very difficult time also.
We have warmed up a bit, 20 +!!!
Jacky
I almost picked up this book before my last airplane trip but I had another one to read so didn’t. It will go on my list.
Have any of you heard of the book Dewey? It is the story of a cat that lived almost 19 years in the library of Spencer, Iowa? I just bought it and haven’t read it yet but it is about how a cat that was dropped in the book drop as a small kitten became a permanent resident. Dewey (for Dewey decimal system ) Readmore is his name. It is a true story.
Happy inauguration viewing to all. I wish I had known about the possibility of HBO being unscrambled today. I would have sure tried it.
Georgianna
I only have basic cable so don’t get HBO either but I read they are going to unscramble their signal so we all can watch. I will try it anyway.
I am going to see The Reader this afternoon. I think we read that as a book of the month here but I don’t think many read it. It was a great book and I am looking forward to the movie.
That’s exciting that they are going to be there. If I were 20–no, make that 40– years younger, I’d enjoy it. Apparently the Inaugural Committee has sold exclusive rights to certain entities to cover the events. I don’t get HBO which is filming the big Neighborhood one, CBS has some, ABC has some, C-Span was denied access which surprised me. Those with digital access for CBS and ABC will be able to see of those channels. Bummer. There is some controversy about whether the one on the Lincoln Memorial should have been sold since it’s in a public area. There have apparently been some efforts to change some of the restrictions.
Candace
Our web master and her daughter are going to the inauguration and the mid Atlantic ball. Her son has an apartment near the route and within walking distance of the parade route and the ball. There is a web site that advises how to dress, no one can see you from the waist down so wear comfortable shoes and pants and a fancy top. She is going to wear long underwear under her long dress for the ball. My grand daughter has red hair so if you see a red head that is her, although she is very small. I don’t have much hope of seeing them but will watch any way. Julie also has friends attending and my grandson has six friends coming and staying with him. It will be a big party. I will watch for Leah also.
You do have a huge decision, Jo. It would be hard to be without a car, when are you moving? You’ve probably mentioned it, but I’m forgetful.
My only younger sister, lives near us in MN, is going to the inauguation with her oldest son, who lives in St Louis. Dean won two tickets through his work at Monsanto, and his wife didn’t want to go. She doesn’t like crowds. Leah will be at 2 or 3 balls, and is concerned about dress, but decided with millions of people, she wouldn’t be noticed, anyway. She told us she will be wearing a black coat during the parade, and we should watch for her in case a camera zeros in on them. She is quite excited about it all
We saw John Kennedy in Grand Forks in 1963, it was fun. Jacky
It is a problem selling your car when you want to use it for a while. Maybe you could make a deal with the buyer to put off the sale but guarantee them the car when you are ready to leave. Would you buy another when you get there?
All the news men talk about is the cold and it is colder than normal for here but what is more bothersome to me is the ice. It snowed a little, then melted and froze and snowed a little more. I can get rid of the snow but not the ice and that is a problem, I am having bridge here tomorrow nite and hope no one falls. I can’t get it all off my sidewalk. I think most of us are staying inside because of the icy spots. The roads are fine.
I am reading The Ha Ha by the author Knight (I think), The book is upstairs. This is my library book group pick and is another one about a veteran who has lost his speech and is taking in a nine year old boy of an old girl friend while she is in re-hab. I have just started it but it looks promising.
The word alone strikes horror in me!! I want those car keys still in my hand when they close the lid!
Candace
I’m still here, just not on the computer much - been sorting! Yuck.
As Julie said, this is an open blog and likely someone wrote that post, accidentally put it in the wrong place and then didn’t know where she had put it. I don’t believe it’s a problem but if it should turn out to be with any post, we (read Jenny) do have options.
Had a bit of snow last night - just enough to mess up the windshield. I am SO glad I pull up my windshield wipers - they would freeze to the windshield otherwise as this is not the nice fat wet snow but the dry crystallized stuff. Yuck.
I am thinking very seriously of selling my car before I go to CO; problem is - if I sell it too soon, then I am carless and how do I get my shopping etc done. If I wait until I get to CO, I doubt that it would sell as quickly. Posers, ad nauseum.
Hi, all,
I won’t speak for Jenny the blogmaster, but in looking at the settings, I think anyone can register her/himself. I suspect that the fancy dress store post happened when someone accidentally pasted text into the wrong message board and clicked PUBLISH without realizing what she’d done. It could have been one of our regulars, using the name she uses on a different board, or else a lurker or a complete stranger. This board is public, viewable by anyone.
Julie (sister of Jenny, daughter of Darlyne)
Ditto, Darlyne… lately I have to sign in every time to get the board. There was one other time when I was puzzled about a post by someone I did not recognize. She responded to my post about a book about a murder. She said she was the daughter of the murdered woman and took exception to the account in the book. I decided that perhaps she was a friend of someone who does post here and that was how she had access. Maybe someone has the answer to this one. Jo, where are you?
Candace
Huh! How did that get in here?
