Daytona and the race

Posted by jackyjones on February 16th, 2008 10:45 pm

My wi fi card doesn’t work in this hotel, but the hotel computer does. Clive and company did go to the race today and had a good time, his right cheek is very sunburned, he wouldn not put on screen that our son in law offered. Tomorrow is the big race, and his cousin has a handicap sticker, so they didn’t have to walk very far, but tomorrow they have to leave at 7;3 0 to get into the handicap zone, and the race isn’t until 3 pm, so they are taking a lunch.

I had a good time today with Darlyne and my cousin’s wife Johanna and her daughter, Laurie, who live in St Augustine north of here. Jo and I were young mothers at the same time in Oslo in the late 50′s and have wonderful memories of struggles with small kids, busy husbands, and little money. She organized a “sewing club” of similiar status women, and we met monthly, and patched or glued “green stamps” or just visited. It was a life saver for me and the book Angry Housewives eating bon bons, reminded me of those days. She loves to read, and hasn’t read that one, but is going to get it.

Tomorrow our daughter wants to go to the tallest lighthouse in the state where we can see most of Daytona, and the day will go by quickly. Laurie taught grade school here in FL for 30 years and now is out of the class room but still works with teachers. Her dad, my cousin, who also was a teacher, spends most of his time reading, and his wife and daughter say he “edits” books as he reads them, with a red pen. They wonder where all the “proof readers” are. I don’t notice this sort of thing.

Mon we leave here and go back to the Orlando area for a few days.

I hear its warmed up in Oslo and area.

Florida

Jacky, the meds may also be making him sleep; I hope he gets over that bronchitis soon. It’s no fun.

My #3 son lives in Kissimmee so he’s close to those possible tornados; I’m hoping they go right over FL and die. I like FL this time of year but in summer, i’ll take PA, thank you.

That Save and continue Editing, Save and Publish ‘buttons’ are all the same color on my PC. Must be the two different computer systems are different. Who knows? The techies who set up these programs all have their own ideas about how they should look. Be nice if they were consistent.

Cold here today; I’ve got the thermostat set up higher than normal. Being on the first floor and the cold cold ground keeps it chillier than the second floor. If I did stairs better, I’d be on the second floor too.

Stay warm folks.

drafts

Posted by Darlyne C on February 13th, 2008 8:54 am

I find that sometimes I click on save instead of publish and go on my merry way. I don’t notice it until the next time I check in. When you save it goes into drafts. I don’t know why the save box is darker than the publish one.

Jo, thanks for posting the drafts. And Jacky, I hope your weather turns out better than it has been and Clive feels better. I will turn on the races for a while to see if I can spot Clive in the crowd;

Weather here is terrible. It iced yesterday when I drove home from bridge and it wasn’t fun. There was ice under the snow. This morning there is water on top of the ice which I am sure makes it very slippery. My nice neighbor shoveled my walk and put my paper on my porch so I didn’t have to slide out to get it. I have a very nice neighbor. It is supposed to rain all day. I hope that melts the ice.

Florida and tornados

Posted by jackyjones on February 12th, 2008 11:13 pm

We are in the Orlando area, and they are warning of tornados in various counties here, and I don’t know what county we are in, but the map seems to be north of us. After the terrible weather last week, it makes one uneasy.

My husband got bronchitis as we settled in this time share, we went to an urgent care near us and he is now on an antibiotic and inhaler. And he is better, and plans to attend the Naascar race in Daytona on Sun with his cousin and our middle son in law. They are all long time fans. We watched the Super Bowl with our middle daughter and family in Warrensburg, MO. We were all cheering for the Giants, I noticed the Manning brothers and the coach of the Colts last year.

I just hear that there was wind damage at Cocoa Beach on the weather news on TV. I found there was no internet connections in the building we are in, but you can rent a “box” at the office, but they were all taken until this afternoon when I checked. I do have a wireless card that works well in most motels now. Its so nice to be online again, esp since Clive has been sleeping a lot, which I hope helps the meds work.

I’m still reading Pillers of the Earth, and like the way Follett develops his characters so I feel I know them. His description of the boy, Jack, setting the church on fire was amazing.

Jerry, I want to get Grisham’s newest book too, I enjoyed his “football” story, but haven’t read An Innocent Man, I loaned it to my son and haven’t gotten it back.

nice to read GGOBIT again, Jacky

Some responses

Posted by Co Jo on February 12th, 2008 10:48 pm

I found some 25 or so posts in the draft file and have sent some of them on. The ones I deleted didn’t reference anything and the two that did were directed at me, as follows:

1. I have gotten used to my hearing aids finally and still haven’t found the one the cats carried off. I would love to have found it between sheets of the newspaper!!!!!!!!

2. I didn’t really have a favorite for the Super Bowl but I was glad for Eli Manning – Peyton got so much attention and Eli’s was mostly so negative that I was happy when he showed what a good quarterback he really is. Both won Super Bowls and both were the MVP (Most Valuable Player for those who don’t know what MVP is).

If you write a post and it doesn’t show up, look for it in the “DRAFT” file. That shows up when you have written a post and then close the GGOBIT site. You shouldn’t have any trouble at all finding that DRAFT link. There are no more posts in it as of now.

Thanks, Darlyne and Jenny!

(((this gives Jacky’s new email address so if you haven’t changed your list, please do so. Jo)))

As you can see, you’ve fixed my problem. To explain, I got tired of “dial up” and am now on high speed or whatever its called. So I have a new e mail address, its jackyjones@invisimax.com

Still have company, so no time of my own.

((I’m sending this one on because whoever posted it asked a question which I hope someone can answer. Again, this draft doesn’t tell who wrote it. Jo)

Jerry, this sounds like the kind of book I like to listen to on the highway. Right now I have one by Dan Brown that is very gripping. The only other thing of his I read was It was disappointing to find no listing for tape or CD indicated. Incidentally, maybe some of you know the answer to this: When Amazon lists audiotape, Mp3, and some other thing, I’m not sure if that means the tape is for an Mp3. Since most books now are on CD or DVD and it has been increasingly rare to find books on cassette tapes, I’m guessing these are not the same. Anyone know? I usually look on Amazon to find out if a book is on tape, CD or large type and then look for it at Half Price Books.

Ah yes, “For All The Girls I Loved Before”.  Wasn’t that a great one?  And it really didn’t sound odd at all.

Welcome back, Susan.  To those of  you in a location where you are able to walk around without a heavy winter coat, I envy you.  I am happy with Idaho now that I am in my new location though, as I don’t have to drive in it and it is really beautiful.  I don’t ever remember this much snow in Minnesota.

Thanks Jerry for the review; it’s nice to know Grisham is back on track.

I just finished this new one by John Grisham and it lives up to Grilsham’s standards; a real page turner. You can get it at Sam’ for about $16.

Three Cups of Tea

Posted by Owl36 on February 10th, 2008 1:37 am

I heard about this book three times in one week so picked it up. Only read the first two or three pages but I want to read it soon. It is about a mountain climber in Pakistan and Afghanistan who has an experience. Then sets about helping the girls in Pakistan get an education. It is not fiction.

I miss all of you and think of you often. Jo, I am sorry to hear about your accident. Take care of yourself.

Real Life

Posted by Co Jo on February 7th, 2008 10:10 pm

It does get in the way now and again, doesn’t it, Susan. Hope it didn’t cause too big a road block.

All is well here; cooler than yesterday but still not too bad. It is going to get cooler however. And maybe some snow. Bah Humbug!

I’m off to bed and read a bit. Nite all.

tornadoes etc

Posted by Darlyne C on February 7th, 2008 11:36 am

It is good to here from you Susan. I will put the Madonna’s on my list. I think it has been mentioned here before.

I feel almost guilty that I feared the tornadoes I experienced in WI. They are nothing like what is going on now. It looks horrible. I feel for all of the people in the area.

We had a spring like day yesterday and it is almost as warm today. I walked without a coat which is unusual for this area in February. I will take it anyday.

Hi, everyone!

Posted by GoGrandma on February 6th, 2008 10:54 pm

I seem to have been away from here for a long time. I’m not quite surw why, but I guess real life got in the way. I haven’t time to read all the posts since last time I was here, but I hope everyone is OK. I did hear about Jo’s problem, though.

I just finished The Madonnas of Leningrad, by Debra Dean. It’s our real life book club selection for next week, and the facilitator arranged for Dean to be with us by speaker phone, since she lives down in Seattle. It should be an interesting discussion.

I’ll try to get back soon.

Odd pairing is right.

My favorite recording of Julio Iglesis was with Willie Nelson. It always seemed such an odd pairing but I enjoyed the music.

Competitions

Posted by Co Jo on February 5th, 2008 10:17 am

You’re right, Candace, Tom DID own up to paternity and faced it like a man. (Hasn’t he heard of protection?) But speaking of competition, back in the days when Julio Iglesias was so popular (remember him, ladies? He was a very nice looking South American heartthrob singer), a radio station in San Francisco conducted a very unofficial poll about who women would prefer to sign them a love song: Julio Iglesias or Placido Domingo. And Domingo won that one hands down. He was my choice too, then AND now!

Rainy today – time to stay inside.

Tom vs. Eli

Posted by CCNL on February 4th, 2008 10:39 pm

I agree, Jo. Actually I was a little surprised but pleased that the majority in that unscientific poll saw Eli as the better one. I, too, was turned off by the baby angle. From what I’ve read, he had broken up with her before she turned out to be pregnant. At least, according to reports, he accepted paternity and is supporting the baby. He comes across as a bit smug.

Tom vs Eli

Posted by Co Jo on February 4th, 2008 10:24 pm

I’m not at all surprised that the females preferred Eli — he’s the boy next door who can be strong and supportive but still has a shyness about him. I like the boy’s looks! Tom I think is rather impressed with himself. I was really turned off when his previous girlfriend gave birth to his baby and he was already dating another woman and apparently didn’t even go for the baby’s birth!!! I get the feeling he’s trying NOT to show how impressed with himself he really is. I’d take Eli or Peyton any day!!!!!!!! They, however, would likely collapse in hysterics at this 77 yr old g’g'ma! ROFLOL But they’d both be quite gentlemanly about it, even so.

Politics

Posted by CCNL on February 4th, 2008 3:37 pm

For any of you political junkies, I saw an interview with an author that prompted me to get his book, “How to Rig an Election.” I’ve only started but can’t wait to get back to it–it starts out as a page-turner. I’ve had time to follow more of this year’s campaign and enjoy it because it really is historic. Too bad more people won’t have the chance to see and hear what is actually said. Too often the pundits, whose job it is, admittedly, to encourage conflict to keep viewer interest (and ratings) up, end up with shortcuts and distortions. It has happened with every candidate to one degree or another. This long campaign has some advantage because they are all more exposed. I think all of the candidates who eventually dropped out contributed to the dialogue. I really loved it when the polls were off. It was fun to watch how much coverage afterward was trying to figure out how they could have been so wrong. They were more concerned for days about their own reputations as prognosticators than the candidates.

Peyton

Posted by CCNL on February 4th, 2008 3:05 pm

Jo, I saw an interview with Peyton and the reporter said he bet he (Peyton) was as much if not more excited than Eli. Peyton said he couldn’t remember ever being more excited than he was right then even last year. When the previous playoff game to get to the Superbowl went into overtime, the camera kept switching to Archie up in the box and he covered his face when it went into overtime. They didn’t do that yesterday, for some reason–just showed Peyton. In a newspaper interview Archie said he had never expected the boys would play high school football, let alone go into the majors and win superbowls. I had never heard of the oldest son, Cooper, who had played earlier but had a career ending injury. Peyton said Eli had made it much sooner in his career than he–it had taken 10 years for him to get there. One of the networks had had a “contest” about which quarterback girls would prefer: Brady, the flashy one, or Eli, the boy next door. The result surprised them that most preferred Eli. One said Brady they’d like to date when you were young but Eli was the one they’d want to marry.

Football

Posted by Co Jo on February 4th, 2008 1:30 pm

At first I really had no strong feelings one way or the other, but I soon went for the Giants because of Eli. I got a big laugh (and thrill) watching Peyton up in the family room ‘help’ Eli and said to myself that I bet HE was more tired than Eli by the time the game was over. I’m just so pleased that Eli won it; he is quite underrated as a QB, I think. I’m happy with the results. I’m also rather happy that the 1972 Dolphins are still the only unbeaten team.

Superbowl

Posted by CCNL on February 4th, 2008 10:26 am

For you football fans, yesterday’s game was worth the time. Whether you were for the Patriots or the Giants, two of those plays late in the 4th quarter will go down in history. I had no strong preference but I wanted to watch as a change from all the campaigns. It’s more fun to root for one team. Eli had been criticized so much while his brother, Peyton, was successful. Their father, Archie, had been a star in his day and good guy, as both boys seem to be. Saturday night, weighing one more win by NE against Eli Manning with the chance to equal his brother’s win last year, and the fact that it had been 18 years since the Giants last won the Superbowl, I went with the Giants. To bad I didn’t have any money on the outcome.

HAPPY

Posted by Darlyne C on February 2nd, 2008 8:57 am

HAPPY Ground Hog Day. After an awful day yesterday today the sun is out. I drove to a friends house for bridge in pouring hard rain last night and am happy to see the sun this morning.
