Thanks anyhow Jan, but I’ve got it on hold for me at the library; they have five copies of it. I’ll go get it Monday and have it read before 4 and 5 get here. I do appreciate the offer and will maybe take you up on it for some other book.
Jo, I have the third book and will be glad to send it to you. I would like it back though because I want to have the whole set to give to my grandchildren. That history is part of their heritage and, of course, they have no idea of what life was like at that time when people had to struggle so to build a life for themselves. Just let me know and send me your address.
Love - Jan
My library doesn’t have them so I bought them used from Amazon. They don’t have all of them new. I read the first three and have ordered the next three.
I received the first two Snelling Red River books and read them both - excellent and boy how those folks had to work! Pioneering wasn’t easy. The 3rd book isn’t available at booksfree so I’ll try the library but the 4th and 5th are on their way.
A one-word recommendation: Excellent.
Yes, I’m sure Idaho was quite a change from Houston. Alabama, where I came from, is still having hot weather. I like the days here that are in-between, pretty clear fall weather. We have had snow three times since October 1st, most of the time it didn’t stick but we had six inches of snow the first weekend. It takes some getting used to. A long time since I’ve lived in Minnesota!
Your trip sounded wonderful. Like Darlyne, I don’t dance anymore and I really miss it especially when I see others doing it. Your description of the dancers, especially the old fellow with the cane, was delightful.
I am reading The Kiterunner - probably the last of our group to do so. The description of it didn’t sound appealing, but I am finding it hard to put down. I won’t review as I’m sure you all have read it.
Wonderful trip. I am envious, not only the trip but the dancing part. I can’t do that anymore. although I did dance at my son’s wedding over five years ago. A little wine helped.
It sounds as though you’re having a ball, Candace, and not missing the hot weather at all. Believe it or not, it was 74° on my patio this afternoon/early evening.
I don’t know about global warming but I DO know — weird weather!
A change of scene on a long weekend that seems much longer is wonderful. I left Houston Thursday, a hot, humid 89 degree morning, and in a few hours was driving through snow from Boise to Sun Valley’s 28 degrees. The Swing ‘n Dixie Jazz Jamboree was, as always, delightful. The atmosphere is upbeat, warm and friendly and my kind of music. There were faces familiar from prior visits. Some of the venues have dance floors available. I recognized styles of dancing that date back decades. Some literally shuffled to the dance floor but once there, were surprisingly agile. One man in particular used his cane going to the area and for the first few steps then hung it up and continued “swinging” his partner quite smoothly. One interesting thing I found noticeably different. When last there three years ago I had commented about the number of white-haired and/or bald-headed men dancing with partners who were, by the grace of Clairol, blonde. This year I was struck by the number of women with gray or white hair. I’m still catching up on sleep.

Indeed Follett did write about a multitude of subjects; he must have reference books and notes for here to breakfast what with the research he would have had to do. I like his books a lot.
re Aieda: could it be because the first letters are like the cry folks make when in painful shock? Ai????????????????? Otherwise, I have no clue Darlyne.
But I would have loved to have gone to the Met no matter what the opera was. I used to listen to the operas on Saturday while doing my ironing.
I am anxiously awaiting the Snelling books but first I have to wait some videos my neighbor loaned me: two with Tim Conway, who cracks me up like he used to do to Harvey Korman on the Carol Burnett show. Anyone remember that? Another one is about basic camp for the military, (he’s ex-Army) but he and she both said it’s very good. The fourth is about the race organization for which Dale Earnhardt drove. They are both race fans and I do like to watch and/or listen the Indy 500 while I knit or crochet or something. Just sitting there watching cars go round and around is about as interesting as watching grass grow, so something else to pay attention to is good!
Weather was forecast but we didn’t get very much. Disappointing. And dry!
Back to football!
The opera was Aida. I don’t know why but I have made that mistake before. I guess it is a brain cramp.
I am almost through with the second of the Snelling book on the Red River where I grew up. The books are a very easy read and have quite a bit of religion in the story; I am enjoying reading about the homesteading and the local. Much has been written about that era but I enjoy reading it again, especially it happened where I grew up.
I spent a long day in NY yesterday on a bus trip to the Met. We had lunch there and saw Aieda . The opera was great and it was a very enjoyable day but long. I fell into bed shortly after getting home. We left at nine in the morning and got home at 7:30 PM. It was worth it though.
Our Sunday paper had a review of Ken Follett’s new book. The reviewer said that he wrote on a number of subjects, not just the architecture of a bridge. If you enjoyed reading Pillar’s of the Earth you will enjoy this one. I am looking forward to reading it.
I just finished this book by John Grishom. I enjoyed it. I don’t understand football plays so a lot of it was over my head but I liked the rest of the story. It brought back memories of what life is like in another country. Having dinner that lasts four hours was a new experience. The cars and parking and driving also brought back memories. When we first moved to Brussels someone ask me what kind of gas mileage I got and how much did it cost. When I realized I had to convert miles to kilometers, gallons to liters, and dollars to francs, I decided I didn’t care.

I have no idea where my first Books - What Else? post came from. Cyberland is wonderful, isn’t it? Also confusing!
I’ve got all of Snelling’s books on order IN order from booksfree. There are nine of them and all of the books in the series are available altho two of the nine are ‘medium’ availability which means it will take forever to get them, if I get them at all. They do also list rare books, but chances of getting them are zero to none!!!!!!
I’ve been reading the Virgin River trilogy by Robyn Carr; the stories aren’t too bad although there is a bit of sex there. The story kept me interested enough that I speed read thru the sex. Of course the women were beautiful, the men handsome and virile and knew exactly what to do to help the women through their troubles as did the women to help the men. Good grief - talk about dream worlds. LOL
I wrote this earlier but I don’t know where it went! Off to never never land somehow, I guess.
Take care all - and stay warm or cool, as the case may be. Our temps are some 10° warmer than normal. Global warming?
Yes, I do have those records - got space on the shelf and the notebook is small. ![]()
Trees, Fields and Town are the names of that trilogy by Conrad Richter. We chose those in September 1998.
I read the 1st and 3rd of the Virgin River series by Robyn Carr and thought they were pretty good. I’m on the lookout for the Snelling books; booksfree.com has them and all I have to do is put them in order although they don’t always come the way I order them, which is not generally a problem.
We are supposed to get some rain the next few days and I hope we do. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good soaking rain. Does anyone have snow yet? Someone online yesterday said they had snow; Utah, I think. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. We are some 10° above normal temperature-wise. Warming? It sure seems possible to me.
These were all by Conrad Richter and very good, imho.
I finished the first Red River book of the series and luckily the next three books came in the mail so I started the second. I may have to space them, They remind me of the four books we read together in the “old days”. I can’t remember the names of them but I think two were The Trees and The Town. Jo, do you still have the records. They were very good and I think we all liked them.
Thanks Darlyne for the list; I’ll check about the other 3.
I’ve not had that happen with Amazon altho it did once with booksfree.com; I sent them an email. Happened it was some books I had returned and my account showed them as still out for four weeks. So I gave them the dates I had received and returned and they immediately cleared my account. I don’t know if they ever did show up.
Take care all. There’s weather out there!
I appreciate your sharing your experience. I’ll pursue it further with Amazon. They apparently gave this order to a place called “cajun lady” although Amazon was listed on my M .C. bill.
A year or more back, I had the same thing. The post office record gave the date delivered. Amazon replaced the book. Two weeks later the original turned up. I think a substitute carrier probably left it in the truck he drove that day. I just now remembered another time, about four years ago Amazon sent one by UPS. The trace gave the time and date of delivery–the address was a vacant house in my block. The strange thing was that months later it turned up, correctly addressed, the box battered but unopened. In both cases, I returned the original books. Strange things happen!

I know what you mean about going into the middle of a series, Jo. I have read the first three books in that series, then ordered the next three. No. 5 and 6 came within a few days but No. 4 never arrived and it has been three weeks. My Master Card was charged right away. I’ve never had that trouble with Amazon before. When I complained, they just said it was sent out September 24 - “give it a a couple more days”. Then what?
I tried to find the order on Amazon but they listed a couple for the same number so I went to Snelling’s website and they were listed this way. There are three more of a Return to the Red River.
An Untamed Land
A New Day Rising
A Land To Call Home
The Reapers Song
Tender Mercies
Blessings in Disguise
Does anyone have the titles in order? I hate going into the middle of a series.
Amazon has Snelling books. I am reading An Untamed Land and have ordered three more in the series because i think I want to keep them. I will read those and see if I want the rest in the series. My library doesn’t have them and I didn’t try to have them order them.
