Have a good time, Jo

Posted by J. Jones on May 31st, 2007 7:20 pm

Traveling is fun, esp with and to loved ones.  We toured the WTC site  or rather around it, its fenced in and there is much construction going on in the fence.  One of our tour guides was on the last elevator in the second tower.  Her boss got a call about the first tower, they couldn’t see it from their side of the building, and said “we’re getting out of here”.  He got a bunch to the elevator, went back around the acre floor to find more and didn’t make it down himself.  She lost 27 co workers, and her eyes teared as she talked.  The other guide was a Salvation Army Volunteer, who went the 12th.  She said there was ashes almost to her knees.  All they could do that first day was have wash cloths and eye wash for the recurers.  She said father had worked in the towers for 25 years, was in the hospital when it happened, but when she called him, he felt terrible about the people, of course, but said, “That was my building!”

Two reasons for there not being more casualties, it was an election day, and the first day of school.

On a lighter note, we saw Curtains, with Frazier’s brother, Nils, as the main character, and we all enjoyed it very much. its a murder mystery, comedy, and love story rolled in one, and the music and dialogue were very clever.  Our daughters recognized people from tv shows, Law and Order, ect, but I don’t watch any of those, anyway, these stars fill in time and work by appearing on TV.  But they seem to love a live audience, sp.

We ate one meal at the Bouergois Pig, in East Greenwich, it was an experience!  Pam, middle daugher, had heard of it from a friend.  Wine and fondues and velvet couch and chairs.

We used the on and off bus, subway and a taxi.  And walked many blocks.  The hotel was centrally located to where we wanted to go.  I’d go again, there is a lot to see and people were friendly and helpful, even when we didn’t ask!

while you are gone

Posted by Darlyne C on May 31st, 2007 4:41 pm

We will try to keep it busy while you are away but weekends tend to be busy for all of us. I have bridge Friday, a birthday party in Wilmington Saturday and a movie and after a political thing at the blog masters.

Have a great trip!

Colorado

Posted by CCNL on May 31st, 2007 4:41 pm

Enjoy it for me, Jo. I worked in Denver decades ago and always thought someday I’d love to return to Colorado to live. Last year friends of my son decided they wanted to do something new in retirement. They made a sudden decision to sell ltheir home in Houston, bought a little business, the Sweet Shoppe, in Empire, Colorado, sight unseen. They’ve worked around the clock fixing it up and making a place for themselves in that little town. My son and his wife have visited and they obviously love their new life.

OK then all y’all

Keep the blog working while I’m gone - I likely won’t get online during this stay. Suzanne took vacation time so she’ll be home. Have a good week; I’ll see you all again on the 11th or 12th.

Take care,
Jo

Where I’m going

Posted by PA Jo on May 30th, 2007 4:12 pm

I”ll be in Loveland, which is north of Denver somewhere. I’ll let you know better when I get back. I think I’m going to love the weather there; I checked with The Weather Channel and it’s forecast to be in the mid-70s with one day at 80, and in the 40s/50s at night. I wonder if I can convince them to want me in CO, not in the same house but fairly near.

home again

Posted by Darlyne C on May 30th, 2007 4:05 pm

It is a lot of fun to travel with friends and family but good to get home again too. Jo, where do you go in CO. That should be a great trip.

I guess the end of the boomers are turning 50. I am invited to a neighbors surprise 50th in July with the request that they use my yard and refrigerator if necessary. I have offered these things before and sometimes my oven, This is what good neighbors do and mine are good neighbors. I think it is a neighbor who is my “paper fairy”. Most mornings my paper is on my porch instead of out on the sidewalk. That is very nice especially if raining and in the winter or if I don’t get dressed until quite late in the morning and have to fetch it in my bathrobe and fuzzy slippers.

Home again!

Posted by PA Jo on May 30th, 2007 12:59 pm

I’ll feel the same when I get back from CO. It’ll be fun and I’ll be too pooped!!!!!!!!

I hope you can find something about Duel, Jacky; it sounded good.

The other book I picked up at the Goodwill was Chas. Kuralt’s AMERICA. I always liked his TV programs.

I’m doing laundry - it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo exciting!

Home again

And there is no place like it!  However, my sister and I, and our 4 daughters, 3 of them mine, had a great time in NYC.   I’m tired now, but will write more about it tomorrow or soon.  And Jo, I just read of your request about the book called Duel or something like it.  I’ll try and find it, but it was our oldest grandaughter’s college history book, so I may not have it anymore.  I’ll look.

50th birthday

Posted by CCNL on May 29th, 2007 5:08 pm

There’s a lot of that going around. My son and dil were in town Sunday for a friend’s 50th surprise birthday party. Afterward I asked if it had really been a surprise. They said it definitely was because his birthday isn’t until next Sunday. His wife had never been able to surprise him so she figured this should do it and it worked.

Another 50th Birthday

Posted by PA Jo on May 29th, 2007 2:25 pm

My baby turns 50 June 8 and most of the clan is gathering in CO for that. I leave PA on Friday, going to MD to fly to CO w/son Gene and his wife. I’m not sure why they’re going so early since her b’day is a week from Saturday but I’m going early because she said she is ready to learn how to knit. I nearly fell off my chair when I read THAT email!

These nosy little furballs came within || that much of becoming slipper liners today. I had a glass a third full of water and one of the little demons tipped it over. Fortunately for them it didn’t get into the keyboard or they WOULD have been slippers for sure.

And I guess that is the end of my news. I lead a very busy life! :-)

Y’all take care.

Tea, anyone?

Posted by PA Jo on May 28th, 2007 5:37 am

For those who might be interested, check out uptontea.com. They’ll send you a free catalog and you can spend the whole day or two reading the descriptions of the teas and whatever article is featured.

Interesting reading if nothing else!

Earl Grey Vanilla Creme

Posted by CCNL on May 27th, 2007 5:38 pm

That sounds so good!! I used to enjoy an Oolong (sp?) tea and ran out. All this talk about tea is making me want some. Don’t know exactly why I ever stopped drinking it. Come to think of it, I think there’s a jar of a spiced type tea in the freezer that I got from Seattle. Going to check it out.

Tea Part ll-a

Posted by PA Jo on May 26th, 2007 2:35 pm

Did y’all know that when the settlers first came across the ‘pond,’ they would cook the tea but instead of drinking the liquid, they served the tea itself with milk and sugar.

Yuck.

I don’t know who first thought of drfinking the liquid and tossing the leaves! He or she was brilliant.

Tea Part ll

Posted by PA Jo on May 26th, 2007 2:33 pm

And from Upton, I get my green tea from Japan, Kuki chai. Kuki tea is made with stems etc and is naturally caffeine-free.

I also got a [packet of Devonshire Earl Grey — great stuff and it also comes decaffeinated.

My #2 son’s wife told me about Upton Tea and their quarterly magazines are excellent. Besides being their catalogue, there is also articles written about some aspect of tea. Interesting reading.

Anyone interested, it’s www.uptontea.com.

Tea

Posted by Jerry Horgan on May 26th, 2007 1:33 pm

Our friend Jo and Upton Tea Importers has made a tea sipper out of me. When I was younger I hated the taste of tea and wouldn’t touch it with the proverbial ten foot pole. After reading James Michener’s “Centenial” and finding out how the old time mountain trappers would winter in the snow and subsist on Lapsang soochang tea I tried it and got hooked.

Then Jo mentioned Upton Tea Company and even had them send me tin of their best Lapsang, which I just ran out of shortly ago. Of course, being a Star Trek junkie, I had to try “Earl Grey, Hot”; also from Upton’s.

Last Thursday afternoon I was browsing Upton’s and couldn’t resist their Earl Grey Vanilla Creme so ordered 250 grams. Can you believe it…it arrived by USPS this morning. I’m having a cup of it right now and it’s delovely!

Huggz all,
Jerry

PS: No Upton’s is not paying me a cent for this commercial.

Memorial Day

Posted by Darlyne C on May 26th, 2007 11:33 am

I just got back from watching the Memorial Parade here. I walked there and back and had a bench to sit on during the parade; however, I stood and put my hand over my heart every time the flag went by. No one else along the route that I could see did that. Many were already standing but many were not. Isn’t that the correct thing to do anymore? The parade was enjoyable.

On the way home I stopped at the library to cool off and picked up a cd of Larry McMurtry, Telegraph Days. Now it is time to lunch and finish the Sunday paper and not do much else.

vacations

Posted by Darlyne C on May 24th, 2007 12:24 pm

After spending six days with two year old twins and a four year old plus parties etc, I was ready to drop in my chair, drink wine and not do a thing.I got back Tuesday night and just now am beginning to feel normal. It was good to see everyone and my grandchildren are wonderful but I think I will enjoy them more when they are older, although I will be also so who knows, Ones own bed and bath are to be appreciated.

ROFL!

Posted by PA Jo on May 24th, 2007 11:29 am

Boys are something else, for sure. I had three of the live wires before I had my first daughter and the only thing she did better than them, while sitting still, was yelling. My mother would say that yes the boys were noisy but that girl could be heard over them. True! (Then I had another girl to keep the other one from being spoiled.)

Thanks for the URL; I did find it by going to google, also. I have no idea what happened but, since my ‘babies’ thoroughly love walking on the computer keyboard and the button numbers for my telephone, what else can I expect.

Babies, two-legged or four, are cute but work.

You don’t NEED permission to collapse, Joanne; anytime spent with little boys, or even middle sized or big ones, allows the lady to run for cover. LOL

Breast Cancer Site

Posted by bookwrm on May 24th, 2007 10:58 am

PA Jo, I sent you the URL for this site vis email. I have it on my tool bar, and it works everytime I click on it. I also click on the other sites, Literacy, Hunger, Pets.

I must tell you I have had a wonderful, if hectic, four days. My daughter who lives in Neb. came down with her two sons. She hadn’t been down here for about 15 years, and we hadn’t seen her since about 1999/2000.
Boys are certainly different than girls, and I’m not being facetious. They want to be doing something all of the time, especially these guys who are used to living in the country! She took them to 6 Flags Over Texas, and I took them all bowling yesterday! We had a great good time, but the house is nice and quiet now. I will give myself permission to go collapse with a good book now, if you please!

New Book

Posted by Jerry Horgan on May 24th, 2007 8:12 am

I see that Khaled Hosseini, (author of “Kite Runner”) has written a new book titled “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. Has anyone seen it? I really enjoyed “Kite Runner” and plan on trying this new one.

Help!

Posted by PA Jo on May 24th, 2007 7:38 am

I have (had) a link to the six places to click for support these different organizations: World Hunger, Animal Rescue, free mammograms, literature for kids and two others. I have been
‘clicking’ but yesterday and today I’m not getting those sites. I get something entirely different.

Does anyone else have any one of those places and if so, would you copy the URL and put it in here or send me an email? I have no idea why, suddenly, I can’t get them.

red x vs. red dot

I really enjoy the people in this group.

Last year sometime, you wrote about a book called Duel which was about Churchill and Hitler and I’d like to know the author.

I was surprised that when I googled GGOBIT, I found someone has been trying to contact me (Sharon ?? in AOL) and when I clicked on that item, I got GGOBIT but from 2006!!!!!!!!!! And there was your post about Duel.

I did send Sharon an email - I hope I got it right; I’ll let you know.
