The title of Jodi’s book is Salem Falls and she used ideas from from the Salem witch hunts in this book.  A quiet day in Oslo, around 70 degrees and we got a very small shower this am.  Our son stopped by and says they will finish planting sugar beets and grain this week if it doesn’t rain more, and then we will need rain, but not a downpour.  There is very little irrigation in this area.  For many years we’ve been too wet quite often, but when I was a kid in the dirty 30s, it was dreadfully dry.  And very hot.  My mother said she had me sitting in a rinse tub often to cool off.  No ac in those days, no electricity my first 8 years or so.

Pilgrims

I’ve started a big paperback titled “Mayflower” by Nathaniel Philbrick. From what I gather from the cover blurbs it covers a lot of stuff about the pilgrims that history never touches. Too early to say if I like it or not, but I dig the subject.

Kittens and Raven Heights

Posted by J. Jones on April 29th, 2007 11:55 pm

Your furry friends sound delightful, Jo, I can almost picture them.

I skipped to the last chapters of Raven Heights, couldn’t handle all the trauma of the teacher wrongly accused of raping a student, but it does end ok.  Jodi P. has woven in teens envolved in witchcraft, and again a very surprize ending.  She also has the beginning of her new book, 19 minutes, which Darlyne mentioned reading.  I dont know if I want to read it or not, it fits in with what happened at Virginia Tech.

A more positive book is Hope Rising,  about a camp for troubled kids that uses horses to give them a different look at life.  Many of the horses have been abused and hurt too.  The camp is run by a young couple, Kim and Trop Meeder, in Central Oregon.  Its called Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch.  Jacky Jones

Kitties

I probably will keep two of the babies; they are loving little imps. One is quite happy with me and the other will take much more socializing but i’m working on that - when I can catch him/her…will be ‘it.’

Does this mean you will keep two babies and Miss Puss, Jo? With two to tussle they would be more likely to stay away from your feet.

Sunday April 29

It is a lovely spring day here in central PA albeit a bit chilly and quite windy. So I guess it’s the spring-time version of the cold sleety day and fireplace, wine and book. ;-)

Booksfree has the book, Jerry, and I’ve put it on my list.

The kitties are rambunctious and fractious and skittish and hungry. They nurse frequently and then sleep for an hour or so; then get up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and have it again. One or two of them are even taking nibbles of Mom’s food and they’ve found the water. I got the automatic feeder and automatic watering dishes. The water jug hold a gallon but I only fill it half way to keep the water more or less fresh. I’ll change it every two days or so, however. Food disappears fast, even with just Mama eating it; you can tell she’s producing food for her army.

My neighbor brought her grandsons down to see the kitties; found I have one left to give away and they dashed right back upstairs to call their mom and see if they could have it. Since they didn’t come back down, I’m assuming mom said no. ;-) I am not surprised; my own kids wanted every animal they ever saw. Remember those days?

Time for lunch - have a lovely Sunday all.

The Road

Posted by J. Jones on April 27th, 2007 12:37 am

Sounds like a book I’d like, we are going into Grand Forks tomorrow to work at the Shrine Circus.  My husband belongs and asked if I’d like to help along with him.  He gaurds a door, and I’m in a booth selling that “junk”  to kids, but its for a good cause.  So I’ll see if our Target has The Road.

My sister and I went though my parents boxes of photos today.  It brings back so many memories and faces of people no longer here.  Our grandkids and our brother’s family would like some sort of family history, so Leah has a scanner and will make cd’s for those who want them.   And I still haven’t gotten comforable walking shoes, think I’ll look at SAS again.  I used to wear them and liked them.

We came upon photos of you and Curtis, Darlyne, when you and your brother came out to look at our new kittens.  Also some of your mother with our mom.

The Road

Jerry, that sounds like the kind of book I like to listen to on the highway. When I checked Amazon I wasn’t sure if the audiotape they refer to would be cassettes since they refer to Mp3 which I’m guessing is not the same. I can use a CD but prefer cassettes when available–too bad they’re getting fewer in favor of CDs. My car’s CD unit is in the trunk and I like to keep music in there and tapes for books so I can switch between them easily.

I have reserved that book on tape or cd at the library. It is due the 30th but that is OK because I am listening and reading others right now. The Road sounds very interesting.

I’ve just finished this book by Cormac McCarthy and you can take it from me; it’s riveting! It follows a man and a little boy, (his son) walking south in the freezing aftermath of a nuclear holocaust.

Don’t wait for it at the library cause it will take too long. Go directly to Target and buy the large paperback off the rack. This book took this year’s Pulitzer prize and I can see why.

re ‘usta:’ I love it.

Shoes: I have to go serious shoe hunting. I have to wear the Futuro Sport ankle support on my right ankle. That’s the one I broke in 1991, then sprained last year and the poor thing is just whining and complaining all the time. So finding a pair of shoes that will fit that foot and my left foot also will be fun. My left foot is smaller than my right anyhow!

I wear a 7 which is a tad big for my left foot but wearable. With the ankle support, it goes to size 8 and that doesn’t cut it for the left foot. Why oh why do I have to be such a weirdo!

Did I mention that the five black spots have found ‘under the bed?’ Mom lets them nurse and then they all go racing to ‘under the bed’ for their snooze. They have only tapped four of her faucets so one has to get his later. You’ll see her plus one and that’s it. I’ve decided to keep the one that is tiger like her. That leaves one to get rid of and hopefully, Cindy’s daughter will take it. He’s kinda cute tho and seems to be smaller than the rest - a feisty little guy and I may change my mind, too. Two young ones and Mom, who isn’t all that old either come to think of it, sounds like a fun houseful.

And a full litter box.

More shoes

I have also bought shoes in the boys department. My foot is longer now but usta (someone here taught me that word) be a wide six. The average boys/mens shoe is a D width while a women’s wide is a C. When I was young I could tolorate a C width but not now with arthritic feet. My young girls also bought boys atheletic shoes before they became popular and had more varieties.

It is a beautiful day here and I am off to a duplicate bridge game. It is about 8 miles from here and a lovely drive.

shoes

I, too, have purchased shoes in the Childrens Shoe dept. Before I discovered SAS I purchased all my sneakers in the Boy’s dept. My bowling shoes are even a Youth size. A boy’s size 2 1/2 usually works well for me in sneakers/athletic shoes. I had a couple pair of Mary Janes from the Girls dept. Nice low heel, and wide toe box. The things we go through to find shoes that fit! LOL. My mom would never let me go barefoot when I was a child, she said she had to go barefoot almost continually when she was young, and that’s why she wore a size 10 1/2! Back in her day, a family with (I think there were 8 kids) could only afford one pair of shoes per kid. And they were semi-rural, so all of them went barefoot at home. Since I never was allowed to, I am a real “tenderfoot” and don’t go barefoot, even in the house. I guess that’s about all you folks need to hear about me for the time being!!! LOL

Small Foot

Posted by Judith on April 24th, 2007 10:23 am

Joanne, I, too, have a small, wide foot. I’ve often said that I should just wear the box that the shoes come in! But I have found that I can often find shoes in the children’s department.
I even found a really pretty pair of red shoes with a small heel that I love to wear with my Red Hat clothes. Children’s shoes also seem to be made wider than adult shoes. However, I refuse to wear shoes that have Dora the Explorer or Mary Kate and Ashley on the inner sole.

I’ve worn SAS shoes and love them. They are very comfortable and seem to last forever. I especially liked them when I was working and was on my feet all the time.

Has any one else been watching the shows on Discovery Channel about “Planet Earth”? I have been and find them fascinating.

>Joanne—-I have a small foot and nothing ever comes in my size>. I know all about “nothing ever comes in my size”, as I wear a size 6N or 6S -(can find only at SAS). Wish I could say I love SAS but I don’t. Went to a foot doctor 3 weeks ago, and she made a mold of my foot and sent off for a orthopedic insert, but I like to wear slides in the summer with no back, so I doubt that I will get much use out of the $350 inserts.

Shoes

I love my SAS. Oh, yes they are terribly expensive, but they last forever: I have a pair that is over 10 years old, they look awful, but feel so good on my tootsies. I also have a newer pair in black, that I wear with pants. These are the athletic type shoes, lace ups.
Also have a pair of dress ones, kind of wedgie-looking to go with other things. When I really dress up, I have to wear different shoes, which hurt like heck. I have a small foot (4 1/2) and nothing ever comes in that size, so I have to go to a 5 for dress shoes. Causes me much pain and suffering.

Shoes

Posted by Darlyne C on April 23rd, 2007 3:26 pm

I find that the athletic shoes are really the most comfortable for walking. But you don’t always want to wear those if you aren’t dressed for them
The best ones I have found are the New Balance. Julie took me to a NB store where they measure your foot so I got the right kind and size. Now I can order them on the net, I also like Birkies and now they have Crocks which are wonderful. They are a rubber type sandal but your feet don’t —-er become dewy in them. I have lime green ones and will wear them a lot this summer. They are under $40.00. LL Bean has a fake one for much less and they are just as good.

I also went to a Zappo’s web site and they had one for comfortable stylish walking shoes and I got a pair of Propet’s in black. They lace all the way from toe to instep and are wide enough for me and you can lace them as tight or loose as you want. I have had many compliments on them when wearing them and have gone on long walks and been comfortable. For my wide arthritic feet that is something. I hope this helps.

One of the most confortable pairs of shoes I’ve ever had was a pair of athletic walking shoes. Add a pair of socks and you cna walk forever in the things. I think they even beat Birkies for continual walking, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Birkies!!!!!

SAS’s are good too - also expensive.

Good luck and let us know how you fare, all you shoe hunters.

Spring and Salem Falls

Posted by J. Jones on April 22nd, 2007 11:06 pm

I’m cautiously optimistic that spring has sprung in Oslo.  The themometer almost read 70 this afternoon!  I rode my bike around a 6 mile section south of town, and, as usual, came home facing the wind.  Some of my 10 speeds work, so I peddled faster but easier.  It’s so nice to be outside.

I’m reading Salem Falls, by Jodi Picoult, and as usual she sucks me into the problems and pains of her characters, again quite a few teens.  It was written in 01, so maybe you’ve discussed it?

I loved your description of going to a book sale, bookworm!  I feel the same about wandering through a library or Barnes and Noble.  I always wish I knew what going on between the covers of those countless books.  I even like the smell of a library.  And the quiet.

Darlyne, I’m comfortable “shoe hunting’ too.  My daughters, three of them, and my sister and her daughter and daughter in law, are planning a trip to New York City the end of May.  My sister turned 60 and our oldest daughter 50, so this is the party.  Two of our girls were nanny’s in NYC when they were in college, so they are familiar, sort of, and my sister has never been there.  But i need comfortable shoes, they tell me we’ll be walking a lot.  My hubby and I were there the year before 9/11, and it was so nice to see you then too, Darlyne.

A new Jo

Posted by PA Jo on April 22nd, 2007 5:41 pm

I went to Urban Salon and g’daughter permed and cut my shaggy dog look. I actually look human again.

Leather pants is right but the little devils would probably sharpen their claws on it; leather makes a good strop, y’know.

They found ‘under the bed is a good hiding place.’ Three of ‘em slept under the bed last night for a while at least.

They go to the vet tomorrow for their first shots. Momma gets to stay home. I expect she will be quite perturbed with me. Tough! I’m bigger than she is.

Jo, /what you need are those leather pants that bikers wear, that should protect your legs.

There are many mentally ill young people that are 18 or over and the parents can’t get help for them unless they harm themselves or others, by that time it is too late. A young homeless man was sleeping in a hedge row in a back yard a few houses from me. I heard from someone who knew the family said they had tried to get help for him but the places that could help wouldn’t take him unless he took his pills. When he felt OK he stopped the medication and that is when the symptoms would appear again, The parents were helpless,

Kittens etc

Posted by PA Jo on April 21st, 2007 10:49 am

The kittens are cute but how do I protect my legs? If I wear pants, they crawl up the pants and their claws go thru. If I don’t wear pants, they try to crawl up my legs and get a good start on my ankle support fabric. They are five black spots on my beige carget!!!! The little furballs are all asleep right now; 3 in one place and 2 in another.

One wonders what goes on in someone’s head to get the urge to kill so many innocent people. And why didn’t someone DO something. The young man’s writings were out there; someone needed to make a decision to get him some help. Civil rights are one thing, but that young man was really in desperate need.

I don’t know about coincidence, Judith, but there is something!

When GGOBIT in AOL first started up, Joanne, I was in ABQ and every now and again, I’d start out my post with I went to the bookstore. Those were expensive trips and folks would really give me a bad time. As you say, “I have mt my enemy . . . .”

My goodness, Jerry, has it been six years? But I for one as very pleased to have you still around and posting.

Slip-ons are great when flying - no shoes to re-tie.

Take care everyone and have a good weekend.

Beautiful Day Here

Posted by Darlyne C on April 21st, 2007 8:32 am

It is a nice day and I am going to shop for a new pair of Birkies to wear when I fly to ElPaso in May. I want slip ons and ones that are comfortable to walk in and they are.I have to change planes in Houston and there is usually a lot of walking. I could wimp out and opt for a wheel chair but after sitting so long I feel I need to walk—that is if there is time.

I finished listening to the tape of Anne Tyler’s Digging To America. I was under whelmed It was not one of her best imho. Darlyne.
