Thanksgiving

Posted by Darlyne C on November 19th, 2006 12:05 pm

Whats everyone doing for Thanksgiving?  I am making an apple pie and will freeze for the dinner which I will be having with the blog master and other relatives.

Have a good one and it is OK to eat too much on Thanksgiving.  Even a little transfat won’t hurt.

No particular subject

Jenny, since you are also still on AOL, you can go into their archives to see books we’ve reviewed.  I don’t remember the path anymore but someone still on AOL could probably find them and then send you the directions.  Anybody?????

Susan, I went into booksfree.com, typed in “Wicked” and got 7+ pages of books but nothing with just “Wicked” as the title.  If you would please, tell me who the author is and save me from all that, most of which was romance type and I’m no big fan of romance!!!!!

Well, I must go finish up the packing and and do a vew chores, ie., empty and leave open the humidifiers, water my several plants, make my bed, etc., etc., before I leave for MD.

Have a lovely holiday and don’t eat too much -

Jo

I saw that play and you are right.  A different slant on The Wizard of Oz.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I’ve been gone for quite a while, firsst to Houston and then on a ten day tour of New England and the fall colors. I’d never been there before, so I added five more states to those I’ve already been to. After I got back to Houston, my friend there had to have a couple of heart stents, so I stayed until that was over. He’s fine now.

Just before I left home, I saw the musical “Wicked” in Seattle. What a hoot! My daughter gave me the book, and I’ve read half of it and am enjoying it. I guarantee if you read it, you will never watch The Wizard of Oz the same way again.

Jo, it’s a little late, but I hope you have a good trip. I’ve read all the posts for the last month, and it’s good to see Jenny and JoJazz back again.

I have to say, it’s good to be back home. I love to go, and then I love to come home again.

Tomato–if you go back in the archives you can see what books we have been reading and writing about. You may get some ideas.  I would recommend Water the Elephants by Sara Gruen.  It is one of the better ones I have read in the last year.

Can’t Wait To Get To Heaven by Fannie Flagg

Posted by Darlyne C on November 18th, 2006 6:54 pm

I did enjoy reading about the southern living and southern ladies but was put off by the story.  An elderly lady was on a ladder picking figs from her tree when she fell, knocked herself out, ended up in the hospital and died. Mrs. Shimfissle was a beloved lady in this small town in Missouri.  While dead she went to heaven and we heard of her adventures there.  However God (Ramon) said they weren’t ready for her yet so they sent her back and she awakened on the cart in the ER after having been dead for six hours.  The ER personal hadn’t moved her because they were waiting for a relative to come.  Anyway of course no one really believes her and her main caretaker, Norma has made her promise not to tell anyone of this experience. The story goes on about all the good things Mrs. Shimfissle had done and is doing, the problems the hospital had because of this etc

I just found the old lady a little too much a “goodie two shoes”.  I did finish listening to the tape though as I didn’t have another at the time and needed something to listen to while knitting.  I am probably in the minority about how I felt about this book..

I did like the author’s Fried Green Tomatoes.

BOOKS

I myself liked the monthly selections of books and the reviews send in by you, ladies.  the selection gave me an idea what books to look for in our local library.  since the elections are gone,  i read mostly  magazines.  we have a lot of  magazines here available.  we also have a pretty big library here, but the books here are not to my liking.

Nothing in particular!

I neglected to say so the other day, Georgianna, but I was glad to hear your DH’s health is improving.  Let’s hope it continues that way.

Hot diggity dog – a new Leaphorn/Chee – and probably in hardcover first.  I have all of his books, even some of the non-L/C series, and a couple in hardback cuz I didn’t want to wait.  Hillerman’s health has not been all that good so I’m glad to see this one.  He rather left the last one as a fairly decent end to the series; Chee and his lady were making good progress in their romance as was Leaphorn and his professor.  I guess I need to zip over to Amazon and catch up.

Sorry to say, Miggs, the monthly read kind of died of that old illness – non-interest.  So what we are doing is reporting on the ones we’re reading.  Darlyne had it right – most weren’t reading the selection anyhow.

I’m not sure if I’ll be online or emailing tomorrow so I’ll say now that I wish you all a lovely Thanksgiving with family and/or friends or by your lonesome if that is what you want.  I’ve had some of those and they aren’t all that bad; I could watch football and the parade if I wanted to!

I go to Md tomorrow for son to take me to the airport on Monday the 20th.  I return to MD on the 28th and may stay over that night to drive back to PA on the 29th.  Depends on how much I miss my bed!

Take care all,  Jo

PS:  For those of you who don’t know or remember:  Bookworm is JoJazz; Owl is Georgianna but she signs her posts; and Tomato as we recently discovered is our pal Jenny in AL.

good book etc

Posted by Darlyne C on November 17th, 2006 7:14 pm

The monthly selection went by the wayside.  Most weren’t reading the selection  anyway.

I am reading Ann Quindlands newest and it is OK but I liked some of her others more.  It may be just me.  I am listening to Fanny Flaggs newest and I found that a bunch of fluff although it is getting more interestin now that I am almost at the end.  I will write about these when I finish them.

A Good Book and a Not-so-good book

Posted by Miggs on November 17th, 2006 6:56 pm

Our neighborhood group is reading Annie Freeman’s Fabulous Traveling Funeral by Kris Radish this month.  I read the first 100 pages and then skimmed the rest.  I would describe it as “fluff”.  The premise was interesting but it went nowhere.  I then started Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards and I’m intrigued by it.  It’s well written and interesting.  I don’t seem to remember reading anything about a monthly book selection from this group—isn’t that happening any more?

Hillerman

For you Hillerman fans, I had an email from Amazon that a new Hillerman Leaphorn/Chee book will be out soon.  It’s been too long since the last one.

Owl, is the J. A. Jance a new one?  I have read all of the others, but don’t know if there is a new one out.

?

It sounds as though everything is progressing normally – holidays close, not ready.  I’ve missed several birthdays this month; November is FULL!

Sometimes, Georgianna, when things don’t go right, leave the site and do something else briefly and then go back and try again.  Generally that will work to ‘clear’ the problem.  I’ve even had to get offline and then go back to Internet Explorer (IE) or MSN or whatever browser you use.  I use IE and like it 99% of the time.  It has its moments!

Why

Posted by Owl36 on November 16th, 2006 8:10 pm

I couldn’t figure out how to get my first line clear. It kept starting and then having other words over it. Georgianna

PS In this world dof electronics and technology, it doesn’t pay to miss a day or two! ! Everything changes.

Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven

Posted by Owl36 on November 16th, 2006 8:06 pm

I thinkk this is the book Candace was refering to. I loved this book. Very light and easy reading. It is by Fannie Flagg.

I also have two by Anna Quindlen that I haven’t read but will start one soon. I am reding a book by J. J. Jance. They are mysteries and my kind of reading.

Life has been unbelievable hectic. My husband’s health has stabilized a bit I think. We went to Fl. for a few days and then had company for a week. I can’t believe the holidays are upon us and I am not even close to being prepared.

I enjoy all of you very much.

Hey, Tomato. I like that name.

Donating and fruit cake

Posted by jackyjones on November 16th, 2006 1:30 am

They did give me orange juice and popcorn after I’d donated, and I felt fine for about 5 hours after.  A friend said if your normal b.p. is low, and mine is, one should eat a lot of salty food the day before, and a lot of fluids.  Anyway, I feel fine now, and am making fruit cake, with a friend, but we’re not putting citron fruit in it, just dates, raisins, cherries, and nuts.

And I’m enjoying reading Don’t Look Back, by Karin Fossum, which Darlyne mentioned a while ago.  My grandparents were all born in Norway, so its interesting reading the names of places over there.  Also, middle daughter, sister and I saw the play, A Doll’s House, by Henrik Ibsen. He had some very modern ideas and it was very well done by students at  UND in Grand Forks.  The college is celebrating Norway’s most famous playwright on the 100th anniversary of his death.

Two things

That email turned up when I was trying to send the one about tomato.  It came up and I thought it was coming from “saved” because I’d had some trouble with that it thought it hadn’t gone through.  It was written a few weeks ago about Georgianna’s book she had read and was sorry to see the end.  It makes no sense turning up now and I don’t remember the name of the book, mea culpa.

Just heard another pronunciation I had to share–a TV reporter showed the long lines of people waiting to buy the first new $600 MP3s at midnight.  He said none were–how can I convey this–”DEETrd” by the weather.

Coupla things

I suspect that Jennie’s new name is only for this GGOBIT place, Candace.

But I do have a question for you – apparently your next post didn’t have a subject so we have no clue as to what you had read that was so beautifully written, very creative and you wished you hadn’t finished.  Do tell us what the book is, please.

Lovely lovely weather here – more like early October than the end of November but I have no doubt but what winter will fall with a clang.  I prefer THIS weather.

It is beautifully written, very creative, and I wish I hadn’t finished it.

Congratulations, Gretchen.  Those are wonderful and rare–the ones you find yourself not wanting to end.

Keeping Track

Posted by bookwrm on November 15th, 2006 5:53 pm

For all you ladies who like to keep track of what you’ve read, or would like to read, I have discovered a wonderful little book called “Book Lust Journal” by Nancy Pearl.  She has written “Book Lust” and “More Book Lust” in which she makes recommendations for “every mood, moment and reason”.  These can be checked out at the library.  This Journal is so nifty!  It has pages for what you have read – Title, author, Date and a complete page for notes and comments.  It has a section for Books on Loan, Books I Want To Read, Passages to Remember.  I ordered it through Amazon, but since it they had it “used” I got it for $7.73 plus postage/handling.  It was more than that for a new one. Mine only had one page that I had to tear out that someone had written on.  Several used book places had it at difference prices.

we ate lunch, when my son worked on my computer and ask me what  e          mail adress you want and  i could not think of anything and we had tomato sandwiches so  i said how  about ‘tomato’.  not very exciting, but the best  i could think of, since he did not have much time to spend with me  on that day.

My trip

Posted by Co Jo on November 14th, 2006 4:32 pm

Thanks for the good wishes, Darlyne and Jenny; it’s nice to find out who Tomato is.  How did you happen to be ‘Tomato,’ Jenny?

Small piece of trivia here — when I was a kid, pretty girls were called ‘tomatoes’ by the boys.  Now wasn’t that interesting?????

Off to fix something to eat – it’s too early for dinner but I’ll find SOMEthing !!!!!!!!!
