Late happy birthday Jerry. It sounded lovely, especially the peach pie.
Jenny suggested the cookies solution, and also wondered if I was clicking on “save” rather than ‘publish’ and I think that’s what I’ve been doing for some unknown reason. I’ll try again now. I can read posts though.Â

I think the easiest way to get rid of your cookies is to go to edit/select all/delete. Then go to the recycle bin and pick the ones you need and restore ‘em.
I’ve finished “The Places in Between”, by Rory Stewart; a story about walking across Afghanistan. Very interesting and a brave thing to do with the Taliban still lurking in the hill.
Jo, my birthday was a rousing sucess. The gals in both coffee shops threw parties for me and I ate home made peach pie with one candle on it. Yum! Got a watch, an electric throw and all kinds of goodies for a good calorie boost.
Our liberry just got in a new book by E.L.Doctorow called “Creationists”, in which the author comments in short essays upon various bygone authors such as Poe, Melville, etc. It was in this weeks NYT book review and I have a hold on it at the liberry. I’ll let you know how it is.
Huggz all,
Jerry
I DO have Cadfael’s Penance and it is very good – it’s the last book in the series as Ellis Peters passed away. I can’t think off-hand of her IRL name, Peters was one of her pseudonyms. She did write under her own name, too. I hate CRS.
It is true that if, you delete all the cookies, you will have to sign on again to different things besides the GGOBIT blog. When I empty my cookies, I have to sign into the blog and my online banking account. “Tis a pain.Â
  But necessary sometimes.
re Outside Windows: Don’t do anything drastic there, Darlyne. Do the windows and it’s just before all the nasty fall weather – rains, etc – and next comes the even nastier winter weather. Why bother?   Â
My next two books from booksfree.com arrived today: I’m looking at SAINTS AND SINNERS OF OKAY COUNTY and MOLOKA’I. I shall keep you posted on my opinion.
I keep writing letters to the editor of the Lebanon paper. A news item a few days ago was that a suit being brought again the PA National Guard and two other related organizations had been tossed out of court. The parents of a sergeant in the Guard had sued those orgns. because he had be fatally shot while loading a rifle into a vehicle. My argument against having brought a suit was that since he had risen to sergeant, he should have had the gun-smarts to know to check the weapon before loading it to be sure it was safe to stow. And the last guy to use it should also have checked. I am of the opinion he was also the last guy to use it, but I didn’t say so. I mentioned that I had lost my father during WWII when I was 13 so I was familiar with losing a very close relative in such a traumatic way, but suing was, in my opinion, not the correct thing to do.Â
A woman had written in previously that she wishes the whole week prior to 9/11 would NOT be filled with repeats of the crashes, buildings falling, talking to folks who were there – the whole thing to be seen over and over. Have a memorial service on the day and let that be it. I concurred on that and stated that it was also my birthday. It’s no longer the really happy occasion that it was and having all that precede the date certainly didn’t do either the families of those lost or me any possible good.Â
I had written two letters; the newspaper staff combined them — that was OK with me.
I am collecting quite a fat file on my letters to odd and various editors. It’s fun to state my opinion and feel that someone else thinks it’s worthwhile printing.
Anyhow, stay warm or cool as your area demands and have good days, Jo
Â
I just did that even though I had no problem. I had to sign on again though.
I didn’t finish listening to a Jand Smiley cd. I can’t even remember the name of it but it involved characters involved in real estate. If you are interested in that you may like this book. I wasn’t. I picked up Mercy by Picoult, The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh which is a library book club book and TripWire by Lee Child. Trip Wire is supposed to be a easy read beach book and I needed something to read while I wait for a friend having a medical procedure tomorrow. Now I have to do a little cleaning. I may do outside windows.
Jo: Funny you should mention the Cadfael books because I looked at my bookcase recently and saw a Cadfael book that I had purchased at a library “discard” sale but have never read (I have plenty of those) I have seen a couple of Cadfael movies on DVD or VCR, but never read the books. This one is Brother Cadfael’s Penance. Read it????
Joy
It’s breezy and quite cool today, I may have to get out my fuzzy slippers! I love it and am glad to have autumn peeking around the corner.
I read Janet Chapman’s Only With A Highlander and was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it’s a romance and I really don’t like romances, but the story is fairly good. There’s some magic involved (altho nobody goes into the magic very much) and the girl REALLY falls for the guy so there is kissing. And I was MOST surprised that the sex was barely described! I did my usual speed-read through it, but it was only like a page and almost worth reading! I do have another coming – I’ll see if I’m any more engrossed in the story.Â
I had ordered Candace Robb’s series with Owen Archer – these are dated in the 1300s but I didn’t care for them as much as I liked the Brother Cadfael series. Since I do like this kind of historical novel, I was a bit surprised so I may try them again sometime.
Right now – I’ve gotta go fix me some lunch and get some eggs on to hardboil. Then it will be on to the next Eleanor Roosevelt.
Ciao everybody,
Jo
The first is Murder and the First Lady, and from then on – . . . . .
I read them in published order but they skipped all over his presidential years. I have since put them in some kind of ‘date’ order. I have I think five more to read before I get them all ‘dated’ but I shall persist.
Abscond is a good word. But I don’t think they went to the aol board; they don’t post in there any more often than they post in here.  Â
I was thinking that everyone had absconded (right word?) to the old aol book board. I am glad that you are still here Jo,
The weather here has been perfect also. We will have a few more days of nice before the cold sets in I hope. I did put the storm door insets on two of the doors.
Those E, Rosevelt mysteries sound good. i will try them.
We had several days – maybe ten – of nice gentle rained that totally soaked in and was useful. Yesterday was sunny, as is today, with a bit warmer temps but my slider is STILL open. I put a 1×1 piece of wood in the slider rail and left the slider open all night; left maybe six inches of open door – and the temp was excellent.
I’m reading Elliott Roosevelt’s First Lady mysteries. They start in 1933 as the Roosevelt’s have just moved into the shabby White House … faded and threadbare carpets, faded drapes, squeaky floors, very outdated kitchen. I like these tales – they are an easy read, the mysteries fairly decent – I like the times they portray and his descriptions of his parents and their daily lives. A good summer’s day reading or perhaps better yet, a rainy day read with the fireplace and the glass of wine and maybe a snack or three!
Where is everybody? Â
I would be interested to see how it goes also. Right now I have really enjoyed seven of her books. I think the best was The Plain Truth. They all have a court trial. The charactors are believable. if the author came here i would love to hear her.
Do let us know your impressions, please, Jerry.
Sorry, I misspelled her name but the above is correct.
J
This lovely lady is coming to our leberry on October 6 & 7. I haven’t read any of her books but I may, after I’ve seen and heard her.
Huggz all,
Jerry
Wow! I wonder what kind of creep would respond to a porno e-mail like that. There are probably quite a few like that out there.
My husband is still having trouble with the AOL scam. He contacted AOL after the first attempt to elicit information from him and AOL verified on the phone that it was a scam and ignore it. Then another email came to him to select an address for an anti-Scam program—again supposedly from AOL. This one said that his email address had gone out to several thousand scam artists and they had “just the program” to assure him protection.  These scam artists are relentless. I once had 5000 porno emails sent out under my email name and got some pretty fiesty complaints from those who received the porno. I also got a few from some who really wanted to meet me. I never did see the porno email, but it must have been pretty bad. I changed my email address after that.
That is quite an accomplishment and you and the author are to be congratulated.

Thanks, Jo. It’s amazing how many ways some people figure out to harm others.
Darlyne, the manuscript I referred to is not my creation–I’ve just been working with the author on formatting, proofreading, etc. through months of revisions. Today she said the publisher has mail her the final copy in print for final approval. She’ll make a copy for me–I’ll go over it for typos, formatting, etc. and she’ll read it primarily for accuracy of the text.Â

Thanks Jo, I almost fell for something not like that but realized when my ss number and credit card number were asked for I awakened. I would never give those numbers out over the phone even if they threatened life imprisonment. My scam was on the internet and had to do with my pay pal account which I have had no problem with.
I got this today and even tho’ I’m sending it to the entire GGOBIT list, I thought to put it in here also. Subject: FW: Jury Duty Calls JURY DUTY SCAM Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. Fall for it and your identity could be stolen, reports CBS.
In this con, someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn’t show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Sometimes they even ask for credit card numbers. Give out any of this information and bingo! Your identity just got stolen.
The scam has been reported so far in 11 states. This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they’re with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.
Check it out here:

IMHO this is another great book by this author. For those of you who don’t care for sad books this isn’t for you. It is about two youngsters who grew up together as neighbors. Their parents were very close. The kids became lovers and the girl became suicidal. The boy thought he could help her accomplish this by pretending to help and talking her out of it. Instead of saving her he didn’t and was accused of murdering her. The trial and all that goes with it makes for a very engrossing read. I guess the author does have a formula but her stories are all different and I do enjoy them.
Congratulations on getting the manuscript published Candace. That is a real accomplishment and you should be proud.
LOL Darlyne – that’s the only way to look at the trials and tribulations connected with living.

I have high speed finally. Bit the bullet. Works out well, I think, since AOL is free this way.
I’ve been reading when I had a few minutes but not responding. Good to read about all your reading recommendations. The “manuscript” occupying much of my year is back, this time just to read the final version until the proof comes back from the typesetters to be read for any printing errors. Amazon says it’s 128 pages and will be out in mid October. Wonder how they already decided that’s the number of pages.Â
This type sure is big this time. Been a busy day — later.

The good news from Princeton is there are no termites in my house or garage even though the contractor found a nest when tearing down an old shed. They will treat the garage as a precaution at no cost to me since I have a contract.
Â
The bad news is my partial plate broke and I am getting a new one.
The good news is my dentist’s son can now afford to go to college

Thank goodness I can get books for free at the library.
