What kind of books does he write Phyllis? I put it in this category so you could tell about his books.

I have alway liked Carl Hiassen.. in fact, we spent the better part of one summer reading him, sitting by the pool. Very non-taxing. He writes, IMHO , a lot like Elmore Leonard. It’s definitely a genre that looks easy to write, but calls for a great ear by the author. Best, Phyllis

Please contact me about the new Karon book. I have asked several times if you want it (no return) and have gotten no response. Email me: gchap@aol.com. If you want it I need your address.

For Leah and Joy

Leah put her post on Frank McCourt’s new book in the BB&B category and, naturally, Joy’s comment went right along there too. So I put them both in ROM Ideas.

When you all find a book you really like, that’s the place for it.

I had wondered about his new book – I liked ANGELA’S ASHES but didn’t care a whole lot about ‘TIS and many of you didn’t seem too impressed with it either.

I shall put it on my list.

I’ve just finished reading Frank McCourt’s latest book, “Teacher Man.” As usual, McCourt has written a very interesting and amusing book. I’ll confess, I have a personal interest here. I’ve met the man when he was my son’s teacher at Stuyvesant High School. But seriously, the book is full of engrossing stories about the students and about teaching in general. I’d highly recommend it.

Heating bills

Jo,
I went out to Walmart yesterday and bought a space heater. It was $25 and I figure it will pay for itself. There is no need for me to heat any room except the one that I and the parakeet are in! But I agree with you, I don’t like being cold either.

This one has a safety feature on it that will turn it off if it turns over. I know that they can be dangerous that way.

It has a thermostat on it where I can set the temperature I want and it will cycle off and on to maintain that temperature.

Just an idea.

A new category

This new category is for telling us about any book you’ve read but NOT for an ROM book.

I am home again

Posted by Darlyne Crum on January 5th, 2006 7:07 pm

I arrived home this evening from WI and it has been a long day but the flights were on time for once.

I did something I feel a little guilty about. I had been reading a Ken Follett book which I wasn’t really enthusiatic about but did want to finish it. It was a paper back so I tore out the three forths of it that I had read and just took along the last 1/4th. I tried to lighten my load. I did it and it worked. I finished it. This was an old writing of his and seemed too much like the others, good guy against bad guy with a little sex thrown in. His last book was much better IMHO. Had it been a better book I would have read it and left it at the waiting room for someone to pick up.

Today

Posted by on January 5th, 2006 2:24 pm

Today I have spent some time cleaning up (etc) and have deleted the posts through November.

What I’m seeing is comments made under one post which really don’t pertain to that post at all and some of these include a suggestion for a ROM. I have copied and pasted those particular posts/comments in the proper category and then deleted the post from the wrong place.

Folks, when we want to suggest a book for a ROM, please click on ‘WRITE A NEW POST’ and then click on ROM Ideas when you get the blank post form. True, it is another step or two but rather than clicking on comment, a new post might be the better idea.

Books, Beans & Birkies should be for our miscellaneous chatter.
ROM Ideas is for your suggestion for a book for all of us to read.
ROM Reviews is for review of the monthly reads.
Book Reviews In General is for our general reading but I HOPE that most books we read and report on will be of the ROM Idea category!!! ;-)

The Bookseller of Kabul

Jerry was a bit early with this post, I hope he’ll write more on or after the 15th. In the meantime, here’s his review.

“Jerry Horgan writes on January 3rd, 2006 at 8:45 am e :

Finished “The Bookseller of Kabul” and loved it. Interesting and informative! Have now started Adriana Trigiani’s “The Queen of the Big Time” and so far it is delightful reading about an Italian farm family in Pennsylvania.

This, from Judith:

Does anyone else like Carl Hiaason (not sure of the spelling of his last name). He writes mystery stories set in Florida. The last one I read was “Stormy Weather” about the aftermath of a hurricane and all the sleezy types who come out of the woodwork to defraud people after a hurricane has hit. It is very good and very funny. He has very interesting secondary characters.

I went into Amazon to find (1) a synopsis of the story and (2) when it was published. The synopsis wasn’t familiar to me and it was published in 2002. So I then went into my list of books read (ROMs) and it wasn’t listed anywhere.

Does anyone know when we might have read this? I have no listing for it at all. And I hope I didn’t miss it.

Clarification —

Rom Ideas is for those books we read and think others might enjoy also.

ROM Reviews is the place for us to review the book(s) of the month. THE BOOKSELLER OF KABUL reviews will go there come the 15th of January.

Query: Shall we have a separate place for non-ROM reviews? I would title it Just Books or something like that. It would be easy to set up! Let me know what you think. Otherwise I’m afraid we MIGHT get book reviews included in our BB&B hash of subjects and hard to find if we want to look for something in particular. Remember our bugaboo about changing the subject of our posts!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes, I DO include myself in that one.

I don’t want to get too many categories here but, at the same time, I do want us to be able to find things reasonably well.

I did read that some time ago and probably did report on it. When I get to my own computer I can look it up. I thought it a great story.
